The Commonwealth of Virginia has an opening for a magistrate position in Fairfax, 19th Judicial District, 5th Magisterial Region. A magistrate assigned to this office also may be required to work in other magistrate's offices within the region on a temporary basis. The magistrate is an independent judicial officer appointed by the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia. Responsibilities include conducting criminal and civil hearings.

-- Conducting neutral and impartial hearings related to searches, arrests, temporary detentions, and bail
-- Conducting legal research and analysis
-- Ascertaining and applying facts to relevant legal principles
-- Maintaining order and decorum in highly charged, sensitive circumstances
-- Receiving and accounting for money
-- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institute of higher learning (required by law)
-- Excellent English speaking, listening, and writing skills
-- Strong interpersonal skills
-- Computer proficiency
-- Preference for law degree or Virginia State Bar license
-- Preference for proficiency in a foreign language
-- Preference for criminal justice experience
