JOB DESCRIPTION-Senior Process Engineer
Provide engineering and technical support for multiple production lines and production support functions to ensure the efficient production of a quality product.
•Apply engineering techniques in the analysis of existing production lines from raw materials to finished packages to provide safe and efficient manufacturing systems that meet quality, food safety, environmental and cost expectations.
•Initiate, implement, and cost justify capital equipment and system modifications to production lines in response to equipment performance and product quality issues including managing engineering projects when required.
•Continually improve the rates, efficiencies, yields, and costs of manufacturing systems. Be actively involved in the development and implementation of the long-term improvement programs.
•Lead, design per Engineering principles, installation, start-up and commissioning as well as maintaining and improving all the equipment and lines included in his/her area of responsibility.
•Responsible for the process engineering and improvements in the areas of material handling, ingredients preparation, receiving, liquids processing and aseptic processing
•Ensures compliance of process parameter and running condition with USDA and FDA regulations in the areas of responsibilities. Responsible for improvement initiatives that define equipment data, equipment capabilities, utilization, efficiencies and obsolescence in the area of responsibility.
•Subject matter expert and provide leadership in the areas of liquid process, recart and aseptic operations.
•Develop project justification and engineering proposals including providing input for capital planning process.
•Utilizes the process to analyze available data, plan, and design and implement the best value options that result in low cost/high efficiency renovation/innovation improvements (including the development and organization of necessary systems).
•Participates and/or leads budget preparation and capital expenditure recommendations.
•Acts as subject matter expert to provides assistance as necessary to the supervisors and training coordinator in order for the coordinator to provide appropriate training to employees entering the department (or as needed for process changes).
•Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory responsibilities: This position is not supervisory in nature.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
•Possess strong understanding of mechanical systems found in food manufacturing.
•Experienced at analyzing process data and equipment performance data to improve product quality and optimize system throughput and reduce costs.
•Incorporate safety, sanitation, good manufacturing practices, HACCP, and code requirements into design work.
•Knowledge of process improvement tools and techniques (Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc).
•Possess an up-to-date awareness of Federal, State, and Local engineering codes and regulations.
•Strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills; ability to analyze data.
•Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. Ability to complete major projects. Ability to develop and execute validation documents
•Must be successful at working in a team environment; experience at managing outside contractors, and working with maintenance and production personnel.
•Possess strong problem solving and communication skills, particularly in a cross-functional team setting.
•Knowledge on CIP systems, hygienic engineering, GMP of food industry strongly desired.
•Experience on factory maintenance and process engineering preferred.
•Experience on UHT/aseptic/retort operation in a food, beverage or dairy plant preferred.
•Proven experience in process control both in handling liquids and aseptic process.
Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Food Engineering with emphasis on food, beverage or dairy industries. 3 years of engineering experience in aseptic/liquid process in a FDA, USDA or PMO regulated food, beverage or dairy plant. 2+ years experience in engineering and maintenance of on aseptic/retort/liquid process operation. 2+ years of project management experience.
• 4 years BS in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering degree and preferred Relevant coursework in Agricultural Engineering, Thermodynamics .
• 5-15 years of experience in the supply aseptic food processing systems, specifically with different types of heat exchangers (tubular, plate, scraped surface)
• Substantial application engineering skills for palpable food products ranging from juices, particulates, blended products, viscous concentrates and pastes
• Capable of designing AutoCAD and manufacture of equipment for food or beverage industry (preferred)
Work is performed during the day in an office/plant environment and involves the extensive use of office equipment, such as computers and telephones. Duties may involve working in production environment in which incumbent is subject to the use of or exposure to hazardous materials, high voltage, hot pipes and constant standing, continuous talking, hearing, reaching and feeling. The position requires frequent standing, walking, stooping and handling of equipment. While performing the duties of the job incumbent will be working around moving mechanical parts. The position is subject to long hours (including evening meetings and on-call status).
