The Health Information Management (HIM) Associate of Applied Science degree program at the University of Alaska Southeast was implemented in 1992 and has been nationally accredited since its first survey in 1994. The program is distance-delivered and is seeking a creative, self motivated and collaborative person to help develop and expand the HIM program. The position is a full-time, tenure track position in Sitka, Alaska beginning August 11, 2013, or sooner depending on applicant availability. Appointment will be at the assistant or associate professor level depending upon experience.

Faculty member will be responsible for undergraduate teaching, advising, and recruiting activities within the University of Alaska Southeast Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Management. Teaching responsibilities will be primarily web-based synchronous course delivery, plus face-to-face non-credit professional develoment training as demand warrants.

Successful applicant must relocate/reside in Sitka, Alaska.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.

-- Experience teaching a range of HIM courses.
-- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
-- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design principles and best practices in course design and delivery
-- Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom
-- Ability to advocate for the university

Typical education or training required for this position (including licenses).

-- Bachelor's degree Baccalaureate degree in related area (health information, health services administration, business, computer science, education, or other health-related area)
-- Credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or ability to get credential within two years of hire (OR) Certification in one or more Health Information Technology Competency Examinations (HITPRO) (OR) Certification in one of HIMSS examinations within one year of hire.

Length of time and type of experience required for this position.

-- Two years full-time or equivalent, post-secondary teaching experience

Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position.

-- Master's degree preferred
-- Experience interpreting student needs to produce effective instructional, interactive, course materials
-- Post-secondary instruction and course administration experience as the instructor of record, teaching HIM courses or health information technology courses or career training, continuing education or professional develoment traing experience
-- Ability to work effectively with nontraditional, ethnically diverse, and under prepared students
-- Knowledge of and an ability to integrate instructional technology in the classroom
-- Experience in health information technology, information security, database or system administration, or related field
-- Information technology related certifications (i.e., Net+, CCNA)
-- Experience teaching blended, hybrid or fully online courses in a higher education environment
-- Professional experience in a management-related position in the healthcare industry
-- Exerience working with Electronic Health Records

Duty:
Support University of Alaska bipartite mission of performing teaching and public service. Teach undergraduate courses primarily at a distance using various delivery techniques. Candidate must be able to teach, in a manner consistent with the specific course content description, in two or more of the following course areas: coding, legal, management, healthcare information technology, or billing and reimbursement. Faculty is expected to hold office hours appropriate for the course(s) being taught. Mentor and advise students. Be proactive in modifying and developing curriculum in support of e-Learning delivery of program courses.

Provide University and Community service. Perform regular public service. Participate in university/departmental governance and activities.
