Main Purpose of Job

To support Agency mission to prevent and control infectious disease of livestock and poultry, and to assure consumer confidence by conducting veterinary analytic and diagnostic tests in the assigned regional laboratory of the Maryland Dept. of Agriculture. This employee has the lead responsibility for technical and scientific work performed in the molecular diagnostic program. This position serves as Laboratory Cross-Training Manager. This position manages resources, operations and programs, and represents the Agency. This position is considered an essential employee for continuity of operations purposes.

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is recruiting for an Agricultural Laboratory Scientist III located at the Frederick Animal Health Laboratory. This is a diagnostic animal health lab. This position performs regulatory functions and diagnostic evaluation of biologic materials from horses, mammalian livestock and poultry to prevent and control infectious diseases. This position has lead responsibility for technical and scientific work performed in the molecular diagnostic program. The successful candidate will serve as Laboratory Cross Training Manager. The incumbent may be exposed to potentially harmful pathogenic bacteria and be required to handle dangerous and toxic chemicals. Duties may require wearing protective clothing and equipment, e.g. masks, respirators, and foot and head cover. This position will periodically be assigned 24-hour on-call duty. Weekend and evening duty and occasional overnight travel are required. This position is essential to the Continuity of Operations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: A bachelor’s degree in the biological or chemical sciences from an accredited college or university including one course in general microbiology and one course in pathogenic, clinical or medical microbiology.

Experience: Two years of experience performing laboratory analysis work in a biological, chemical, food, commercial, animal health, medical or public health laboratory.

Notes:
1. Experience performing veterinary analytical, diagnostic, and epidemiological laboratory testing work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Possession of a master’s degree in the chemical or biological sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. Possession of a doctorate in the chemical or biological sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with experience working in a diagnostic animal health laboratory will be given preference.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates for some positions may be given a medical examination to rule out color blindness.

2. Employees must be willing to undergo and maintain rabies immunization.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
