The Parents as Teachers ( PAT ) Assistant for Data and Technology reports directly to and is supervised by the Director of Family Literacy and the PAT Coordinator. The PAT Assistant consults with the Director of Family Literacy and the PAT Coordinator for such areas as scope of work, decision making, and problem solving in carrying out the responsibilities and duties of the position.

The PAT Assistant works closely with the staff and families of the MSU Denver Family Literacy Program to provide and maintain quality home-based educational services for families and children from birth through five years of age. Services are also provided to families expecting the birth of a child through the prenatal component of the Parents as Teachers program. The Assistant will schedule and deliver home visit services using the Parents as Teachers Curriculum developed and provided by the Parents as Teachers National Center ( PATNC ).

The PAT Assistant for Data and Technology will:
  • facilitate the compilation of data, maintenance of client files and the preparation of reports using a web-based data system;
  • assist in the planning and execution of monthly parent meetings;
  • assist with day-to-day PAT program management including the ordering and tracking of needed curriculum and other family education materials;
  • participate in limited overnight travel in order to attend out-of-town trainings, workshops and meetings both with and without the staff of Parent Educators;
  • participate in professional development opportunities in order to maintain qualification/ certification as a PAT Parent Educator;
  • assist other English-speaking Parent Educators with accessing professional development;
  • follow policies and procedures set by PATNC to ensure Parents as Teachers model fidelity.
The Pat Assistant for Data and Technology will additionally:
  • Foster an encouraging and supportive learning environment for families;
  • Execute the curriculum provided by PATNC with the participating PAT family during monthly Home Visits and monthly Group Meetings.
  • Home Visit Responsibilities:
  • Review previous visits from previous month and child/parent interactions.
  • Discuss any problems the parent had working with the child (during the past month) and help them create and develop solutions.
  • Make any necessary referrals.
  • Consult with other members of the Family Literacy staff if assistance is needed with referrals.
Group Meeting Responsibilities:
  • Create informational flyers for the PAT families.
  • Assist with planning activities and scheduling guest speakers at least two weeks in advance on parenting topics monthly.
  • Keep parents informed of meeting schedules and planned topics.
  • Ensure that all necessary materials are ready for parents by the time of the meeting.
  • Set up room (tables, chairs, etc.) appropriately.
  • Prepare and set out refreshments.
  • Assist with preparation of children’s area and activities.
  • Introduce invited speakers.
  • Clean up area after meeting.
PAT Data and Technology responsibilities:
  • Communicate with MSU Denver Information Technology Department to ensure that all technology is current and serviced.
  • Attend Family Literacy Program staff meetings at least once per month to communicate the needs and activities of the PAT program.
  • Serve as point of contact for the PAT Coordinator and Family Literacy Director.
  • Maintain, compile and collect PAT data for the PAT Coordinator and Family Literacy Director.
  • Attend and coordinate PAT recruitment activities.
Other duties as assigned by the PAT Coordinator and Family Literacy Director

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree or at least two years of experience working in a home-based literacy program such as PAT or Home Instruction Program for Parents of Preschool Youngsters ( HIPPY ).
  • Successful completion of Parents as Teachers certification within one year of hire (if applicable).
  • Able to speak, read and write fluently the language of the PAT curriculum to be used.
  • Available for occasional travel and overnight stays for trainings.
  • Ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of immigrant, low-income, and diverse urban populations.
  • Current MSU Denver employee.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, the social sciences or a related field
  • Basic conversational Spanish skills.
