Entry level work providing counseling and administrative services to veterans and their dependents seeking veterans benefits.

Please note: The current vacancy exists in Virginia, however this list will also be used for future Veterans Service Officer vacancies throughout the County.

Distinguishing Features of Work:

An employee in this class is responsible for providing assistance to veterans and their dependents by identifying and explaining state and federal veterans benefit programs; helping prepare applications and case records; and serving as liaison for clients in their dealings with benefit providers. Duties include interpreting program eligibility criteria for clients, coordinating administration of claims, and assisting clients in resolving problems in the receipt of their benefit entitlements. The work is performed within the established parameters of state and federal program regulations and policies, and under the general direction of a senior officer and the County Veterans Service Officer.

Work Environment:

These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. CONSTANT : Work inside. FREQUENT : Near vision; hear within 5 feet; sit; work alone and around others; talk/speak; and customer/public contact. OCCASIONAL : Lift and carry up to 20 pounds; midrange and far vision; use fingers; grasp; stand; and clients with behavioral challenges.

Selection Process:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):
  • Two years of college or one year of full-time paid experience as a Veterans Service Officer.
  • Plus, must be a resident of the state of Minnesota, a citizen of the United States, and a Veteran as defined by Minnesota statute (see MS Sections 197.601 and 197.447)
Note: Promotion to Veterans Service Officer II classification shall be solely contingent on completion of two years service as an entry level Veterns Service Officer I and the recommendation of the appointing authority.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING ASSESSMENT - (SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE - (100% of scoring process): Points will be awarded for job-related experience and education exceeding the minimum qualifications. Only experience occurring during the ten most recent years will be used in determining this assessment. Experience beyond ten years may be included on the application for purposes of meeting minimum qualifications or informing the hiring authority of your complete employment history.
