The Hartz Mountain Corporation, America’s leader in consumer pet products is seeking a Scientist. This position is located in our Bloomfield, NJ office.
The Scientist R&D leads or participates with the product development team to manage nutrition/wellness product development projects from concept to commercialization for companion animals, birds, and small animals.
Working closely with the cross-functional category teams at Hartz, the Scientist R&D will:
Lead project initiatives to develop new products and line extensions and manage timelines from concept to commercialization.
Work with in house manufacturing and co-packers to develop processes that will deliver on product design, concept, nutrition, and quality.
Work with marketing to interpret and utilize consumer research data to develop products that meet consumer and pet needs.
Develop and issues specifications for finished products and raw materials
Formulate and maintain data/documentation in our formulation software program for raw materials, formulas and finished products.
Keep abreast with emerging technologies by engaging in literature searches, attending technical meetings, industry conferences, and training classes.
Perform routine stability studies and makes recommendation for finished product shelf-life.
Monitor Chemical & Biological science studies in-house to assure Good Lab Practices (GLP) are being followed.
Schedule factory trial requests, organize raw material supply and provides support to define and optimize manufacturing procedures.
Conduct biological feeding tests to ensure product acceptability with the pet.
Participate in team and departmental activities such as meetings, committees and administrative obligations.
Participate in company wide cost improvement programs and identifies potential cost improvements within their area of expertise.

Work experience in product development in the food industry (extrusion, retort, asceptic, baking).

Professional Experience and Education
B.Sc. in food science/food processing/ food engineering. 2-4 years work experience in food product development which includes and is not limited to formulation, scale-up, and manufacturing.
