ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for hardware and software provisioning for all current and future Class 4/5 switches in the network along with any other central office equipment, including transmission, DC power plant, and ancillary equipment
  • Engineer, purchase, and commission Class 4/5 switching equipment for the network
  • Engineer intra-office, inter-office, and inter-network transmissions paths, including radio and fiber systems
  • Provision DS1s, DS3s, O(1s, OC3s, and higher, and STMs as necessary
  • Engineer, purchase, and provision central office power plant including rectifiers, inverters, fuse panels, battery, and generators. Ensuring proper grounding of equipment and design of ground fields
  • Implement switch translations as need for call routing, blocking, and feature activation
  • Produce engineering specifications, prepare drawings, prepare and implement test and acceptant practices and prepare cost estimates for a variety of complex SONET transmission (OC-3 to OC-192) equipment, central office equipment, and DC Power Plants
  • Direct Project Management tasks
  • Ensure circuit and equipment availability (ports, channels, power, etc.) to economically meet the demand for customer services-POTS, DSL, and private line equipment
  • Identify and implement new service offerings and technologies for application in network
  • Ensures the reliability of existing equipment and replacing as necessary
  • Submit Project Appropriation Requests (PARs) with estimated costs and necessity of additions and improvement to the network; prepare associated work orders
  • Conduct traffic engineering studies to assist in system design
  • Maintain records on levels and status of central office equipment
  • Establish standards for the network=loop resistance, circuit availability, subscriber signaling, trunk signaling, use of tones and announcements, trunk routing, transmission standards engineering and subscriber equipment
  • Respond to customer complaints and requests
  • Represent the department at meetings and discussions related to central office equipment and network inter-working
  • Perform other duties as assigned
BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • Technical Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or other technical field or equivalent years of experience
  • Knowledge of digital switching systems (DMS, 5ESS, EWSD, Metaswitch, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience in equipment engineering, transmissions engineering, traffic engineering, and radio engineering Knowledge of Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) and Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technologies
  • Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Windows OS
  • Proven analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interfacing with internal and external customers, excellent oral and written skills
