Reporting to the Central Energy Supervisor, operates boilers in the central heating plant and other university locations on third shift during heating season and performs repair/maintenance activities as instructed. Operates three gas/oil fired boilers; immediately reports any abnormalities or problems to the master skilled trades worker; makes adjustments to boilers or controls as instructed; troubleshoots system to determine whether an adjustment is needed or if there is a system failure; performs preventative and semi-routine maintenance on boilers and related mechanical equipment; removes, repairs and replaces steam traps; rebuilds pumps, packs valves, replaces bearings, checks and replaces impellers/turbines; inspects electric motors, replaces brushes, lubricates and re-installs motors; makes internal inspection of boilers; assists in preparing boilers for annual inspection and testing; supervises the unloading and storage of fuel oil. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum and Additional Requirements:
A high school diploma and two years of related experience working with fluid-handling pumps, controls and related mechanical equipment is required. A valid driver’s license also is required.
Thorough knowledge of the techniques and procedures for operating high pressure steam boilers. Ability to follow written instructions and directions. Good mechanical aptitude necessary. Ability to think and act quickly in an emergency. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, co-workers and supervisor. Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. and work in extreme hot/cold temperatures with high noise level equipment. Ability to train on first shift; normal work schedule is 3rd shift.
Three years of experience highly desired. The equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
