Position Summary:
The Supervisor of Health Information Services manages the Health Information Services (HIS) department and ensures compliance with State, JCAHO and Federal regulations pertaining to medical records in all areas.

Essential Functions:
The Supervisor of Health Information Services responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manages department staff, including hiring, training evaluating performance and conducting disciplinary/counseling sessions as needed
  • Manages re-design and re-engineering principles, industry trends, and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services
  • Understands and applies all state, federal or other regulatory agencies functions and standards as pertaining to the medical records function
  • Develops, monitors and evaluates operation and capital budgets and performs cost analysis for budget preparation
  • Performs probationary and annual evaluations and ensures all JCAHO training and competencies are completed
  • Provides oversight and direction of the Performance Improvement process
  • Provides leadership as a committee member or chairperson regarding compliance with information management standards pertaining to HIS and medical records
Reports to the Regional Manager of Health Information.

Keyboarding/Dexterity: Frequently; activity exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time
Standing/Walking: Frequently; activity exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time
Strength (Lift/Carry/Push/Pull): Light (Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently)
Talking (Must be able to effectively communicate verbally): Yes

Color Acuity (Must be able to distinguish and identify colors): No

Environmental Conditions:
No inherent job hazards. Exposed to a variety of constant interruptions. Heavy work volume and high degree of accuracy required and many deadlines,
frequent interruptions (telephone and walk-in), responsible for the supervision of employees and exposed to the anger of unsatisfied customers. May
provide support to other facilities and may require travel to remote facilities. May be required to work on weekends and holidays. May require on call
support, may require return to work during all hours to resolve problems.

VII. Required Competency Test(s)



  • Bachelors degree
  • RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification.
  • 2 years management experience in a HIS / Medical Records department preferred
  • Successful completion of Coding Test
  • Typing 30 wpm
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (Verbal/Written)
