Position: Licensed Practical Nurse (Part-time)
Location: Birmingham

Position Summary:
SUMMARY:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct nursing and health care services under the direction of the Medical Director and in accordance with the PPSE Medical Standards and Guidelines. The LPN is responsible for assisting the clinician, administering medications and providing patient education for family planning and surgery patients. The LPN is a member of the health care team and serves as a clinical resource for staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Surgery

  • Performs nursing functions in the pre-op, operating room and recovery room areas, according to approved surgical nursing standards and PPSE protocols.
  • Ensures all aspects of care are performed in accordance with PPFA standards and guidelines, PPSE policies and procedures, and all applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Prepares patients for surgery.
  • Reviews chart and assures all pre-op records are completed and signed.
  • Inserts IV, if indicated.
  • Administers pre-op medication according to protocols.
  • Assists in surgery
  • Accompanies patient to the OR.
  • Assists physician as directed.
  • Assists in the recovery room.
  • Monitors patients in recovery per protocols.
  • Administers post-op meds, as directed.
  • Provides discharge instructions.
  • Provides patient support during the abortion process.
  • Explains what is happening as needed.
  • Demonstrates empathy and is non-judgmental.

Family Planning

  • Dispenses contraceptives and medications according to protocols.
  • Provides counseling and patient education.
  • Counsels and educates clients on contraceptives and medications dispensed.
  • Counsels and educates clients on medical treatments, lab tests, medical recommendations, and/or referrals.
  • Demonstrates empathy and is non-judgmental.
  • Answers nurse calls and gives client assistance in regards to referrals, medical questions and general information.

General Nursing

  • Triage clients and helps in maintaining clinic flow
  • Documents clearly all care and services properly in the medical record and required logs.
  • Checks clinic records for accuracy and completion.
  • Records services provided on charge ticket.
  • Conducts and maintains records of contraceptives, medication and supply inventory.
  • Assists in the lab and exam room as needed.
  • Assist providers with lab follow-up and required state reporting.
  • Maintains and protects client confidentiality at all times.
  • Completes nurse duties professionally and in a timely manner.
  • Assist with the opening and closing of clinic as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing Program
  • Active State of Georgia LPN license
  • CPR training and certification

Experience:

  • Experience in the public health, family planning and surgery setting
  • Surgical nursing experience in Ob/Gyn preferred

Skills:

  • Excellent clinical nursing skills
  • LPN must be flexible, able to work independently and be a self-starter
  • Knowledge of surgical/operating room management preferred
  • Ability to coordinate surgical and family planning and oversee quality of care
  • She/he must be interested in and have the ability to work well with people.
  • Have good communication skills and an ability to give counsel and education on a one to one basis.

Physical demands:

  • Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time

Languages spoken:

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred
