The Sterile Instrumentation Tech I is responsible for the availability of sterile instrumentation/supplies to accommodate the Surgery schedule and Emergencies/Traumas. The Instrument Technician I is responsible for the care and handling of inventory of surgical instruments and disposable inventory. The tech must be knowledgeable with general instrumentation. The Instrument technician I must be able to receive instruction and utilize the information to perform the following task: decontamination of equipment, prep and package instruments, sterilization of equipment, preparing case carts and restocking equipment in designated areas. The SI tech I must be able to prioritize work load to meet surgical needs. The SI tech I must possess basic computer skills to include Windows and SPM (bar scanning) technology.
The Instrument Technician I reports to the Supervisor of Sterile Instrumentation. The Technician is responsible for the care & handling of $3 million+ instrumentation and must be proficient in the operation of all equipment within the department. This person must be knowledgeable with general and specialty instrumentation and must be able to listen to instruction, and translate it into an activity and reproduce what is taught. The Tech is required to be extremely conscientious with regard to procedures and ensure be accurate and able to follow set rules, refraining from “short cuts” where the technique is involved as the patient’s health or possible life depends on strict adherence to technique by Sterile Instrumentation personnel. In addition, this person must be able to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and accept pressure assignments. Excellent communication skills, computer skills with knowledge of Windows 95/98, ORMIS, and SPM Instrument Tracking systems are a necessity. Walking and standing for long periods of time and pushing case carts are required.
High school graduate required.
Actively maintain National Certification through IAHCSMM or CBSPD preferred.
: Knowledge of the hospital, infection control and medical terminology is highly desirable. Candidate must have familiarity with computer and preferred skills with Windows 95/98, ORMIS, and SPM Instrument Tracking System with an ability to learn and retain the information. Applicant must be able to work in a fast paced high stress environment.
