This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 1 year and 1 day; may be extended up to 4 years). Term appointments are nonstatus, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition.
This position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs in the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 1 in the Center of Excellence on Returning War Veterans. Waco, Texas.
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Conduct clinical interviews with background education in assessment of mental health disorders, preferably including course work in psychopathology.
Accurately conduct structured clinical interviews that require high levels of diagnostic precision and inter-rater reliability with doctoral-level research staff.
Manage complex interactions with clinical populations, including assessment of risk and need for clinical referrals under supervision.
Oversee technical aspects of mental health research experiments and associated staff work.
Work with research staff, principal investigators, project managers and study team on the implementation, management and analysis of study protocols concerning research on mental health issues.
Assist in management of all aspects of research projects.
Perform statistical analysis of research data.
Keep electronic files accurate and up-to-date.
Test "in house" software as it is being developed (training will be provided although prior experience preferred).
Use Microsoft Word to prepare a manuscript for the study performed.
Process and analyze data using appropriate software applications (training will be provided although prior experience preferred.)
Collect and process biological samples (training will be provided).
Perform a variety of office automation and administrative functions such as scheduling participants, typing correspondence, preparing reports, copying, printing, faxing documents, coordinating and obtaining office supplies, preparing/submitting documents for travel authorization and reimbursement, and coordinating petty cash.
Actively communicate and consult with research staff, operations management, principal investigators, project manager and study team orally and in writing as indicated.
Communicate with patients and staff in a sensitive and professional manner.
Conduct a variety of patient assessments, including clinical interviews and neuropsychological tests (training provided and experience is preferred).
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Although some evening hours may be required.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT-
GS-07: Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an appropriate social or biological science, which included or was supplemented by 12 semester hours in psychology. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.) AND
GS-07: One (1) year of technical work under the direction of a professional psychologist in a program of professional services, training, or research.
Work Must Involve : Experience that involved the clinical psychological assessment or diagnosis of behavior and traits of humans. Experience may have been gained in connection with a program of research or direct services in psychology that gave a practical understanding of some of the principles, methods, and techniques of psychology needed to assist professional psychologists.
NOTE: You must document that your work is under the direction of a research psychologist. At least six (6) months of your experience must be comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service or the one (1) year must be comparable to the second lower grade. OR
GS-07: One (1) full year of graduate education in psychology in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.) OR
GS-07: Equivalent combination of graduate education and the experience as described in Question two (2) above to meet the total qualification requirement for this position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.) OR
GS-07: Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A). To clarify, S.A.A. is based on (a) class standing, (b) grade-point average, or (c) honor society membership. Individuals who have completed all the requirements for an appropriate bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university may be rated eligible for GS-07 provided they meet one of the requirements listed below:
(a) Class Standing - In the upper third of their class based on completed college work at the time of application for the position. This is the upper third of the class in the college or university, or major subdivision (e.g., school of recreation, school of physical education). This must be documented on the transcript or by a statement from the school.
(b) Grade-point average (G.P.A.)--Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
A 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better). This is either: (1) The average of all completed college courses at the time of application for the position, OR (2) The average of all college courses completed during the last 2 years of the undergraduate curriculum. Must be stated on the official transcript or calculated by the applicant as a specific attachment to the transcript (course, grade, etc.).
A 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) in the major field, where such field is fully qualifying and directly applicable to the specialty field of the position to be filled. This is either: (1) The average of completed courses in the major field at the time of application for the position, OR (2) The average of college courses completed in the major field during the last 2 years of the undergraduate curriculum. Must be calculated by the applicant as a specific attachment to the transcript (course, grade, etc.).
Grade-point averages should be rounded to one decimal place. For example, a 2.95 should be rounded to a 3.0 and 2.94 should be rounded to 2.9.
(c) Election to membership in a national scholastic honorary society meeting the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. This must be noted on the transcript or documented by the applicant. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
