Linux Administrator

The Buck Institute for Research on Aging is looking for an experienced Linux Administrator to join our team. The position will entail working directly with both complex computational infrastructure systems and our scientists. The focus will be on Linux/UNIX servers, storage arrays, network infrastructure and computational projects. The position is responsible for building, implementing, and managing products and solutions for The Buck Institute computational environment, while ensuring 24/7 availability. The position will require an excellent understanding of LAMP stack technologies. The ideal candidate will have proven technical experience with a solid foundation in Linux/Unix operating systems along with a positive attitude.

  • Design, build, implement, and manage products and solutions for The Buck Institute
  • Monitor and maintain all production Linux and Unix systems including the Bioinformatics Core enviornment
  • Maintain FreeNAS fileservers.
  • Participate in the planning and coordination of new product deployment and enhancement projects, ensuring preparedness in servicing the product
  • Ensure 24/7 availability of the production application environment. This will include 24/7 on-call responsibilities on a rotating basis
  • Develop system analysis and reporting tools for task automation
  • Document technical environments, processes and procedures, testing plans, project plans
  • Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards
  • Train end-users and Help Desk when needed
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering Discipline
  • 5+ years total experience with systems administration, as well as hardware and software troubleshooting
  • Must work well in high pressure environments
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, SNMP, DHCP, VLAN, Trunking, Switches, routers, firewalls, sniffers
  • SAN and NAS technologies (ISCSI, FCP, CIFS, NFS, etc)
  • Advanced storage experience (DAS, SAN, NAS, Free-NAS, HSM, R-Sync, etc.)
  • Rocks Cluster, SGE, HPC administration, understand parallel processing
  • Bash & Perl scripting
  • Previous experience in a website environment preferred
  • Experience in automation and managing large server environments
  • Firm understanding of Linux networks and services (NIS, Bind, Apache, Samba, etc.)
  • Strong problem solving skills: innovation, collaboration, analysis, inductive reasoning
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and drive to be successful; ability to work independently with minimal supervision or assistance
  • Proficiency in presentation of technical and business subjects to technical and non-technical audiences
Skills considered a plus:
  • Programming in perl, python, java, or c
  • Open source project experience
  • Previous oncall experience
  • Scientific background
