Our Cargill Salt business produces packages and ships salt for a wide range of market segments: Agricultural, Food, Water conditioning, Industrial, Chemical and packaged ice control.
We operate more than 20 manufacturing, processing and warehousing locations that make salt from three major production methods: Mechanical evaporation at facilities in the U.S. in California, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, New York and Ohio; Solar evaporation and harvesting from ponds in California, Oklahoma, Utah, Bonaire in the Dutch Antilles, and Los Olivitos, Venezuela; Rock salt mining from underground mines in Louisiana, New York and Ohio.
Cargill Salt services a variety of customers ranging from home improvement, hardware, grocery, and convenience store retailers, to food makers/processors, water conditioning dealers, and foodservice and general wholesale distribution. We make more than 1,000 different salt products and package sizes. In addition, we market national and regional brands, including Diamond Crystal® branded household consumer food and water softener salt products, Champions Choice® branded agricultural products for animal feeding, as well as Cargill® and Alberger® branded specialty salt products for food manufacturing customers.
Position Overview and Principal Accountabilities:
Cargill Salt currently has an entry level opening for a Research Chemist at our St. Clair, MI facility. The Research Chemist position will immediately provide analytical support of projects and work on tech support requests. With aggressive skills development and experience, Cargill Salt Research Chemists are expected to execute complex technical research with existing products and processes (troubleshooting) and new product and process development related to this BU (Business Unit). Research Chemists help serve as a technical resource around chemistry in support of customer solutions and technical services for the Cargill Salt BU and Cargill Deicing Technology (CDT). Research Chemists will help R&D provide guidance to the business units on technical risk, assess competitive products/technologies, and identify technology-based opportunities for profitable growth and innovations.
30% - Sample taking, sample analysis, overseeing 3
party lab analysis, raw data analysis, statistical analysis. Analytical analysis, including physical property measurements and inorganic wet chemistry.
25% - Help design and execute research projects to develop new products and processes or improve existing products/processes. Work includes working in/with manufacturing plants, assisting with pilot plant operations, operating laboratory equipment (i.e. environmental chamber), running experiments on the lab bench, or at 3
party testing sites.
25% - Working with customers, Quality Assurance, and operations to provide technical services
10% - Act as a technical lead to projects, technical advisor to the business, and a member of the technical job family
10% - Facilitate and provide leadership with the compliance of environmental, health, and safety on projects and for the R&D group
B.S. in Chemistry or related field from an accredited University or College
1+ year of experience in a related field of analytical chemistry, inorganic wet chemistry, or research and development
Demonstrated competency with execution of laboratory procedures and methods
Demonstrated capability in handling and operating laboratory equipment
Demonstrated excellence in computer proficiency (Microsoft Excel, Word, etc.)
Demonstrated analytical abilities (statistical data, and numbers)
Demonstrated ability to write technical reports
B.S. in Chemistry with emphasis in Inorganic Chemistry
2+ years of experience in a related field of analytical chemistry, inorganic wet chemistry, or research and development
1+ year of experience collaborating with operations, sales or marketing on process or product development
1+ year of experience with troubleshooting manufacturing processes or product quality issues
1+ year of experience with pilot plant operations and/or working with a manufacturing plant
Proven experience in the proper usage and storage of chemicals and hazardous waste
Wet lab chemistry experience, specifically with Inorganic Chemistry
Proven ability with statistical analysis, and the design of experiments
Proven experience working with pilot and plant type manufacturing/processing equipment
