About the Position

Reporting to the Director of the Educational Opportunity Program and in collaboration with departments within the University, the EOP Academic Advisor promotes San José State University's (SJSU) commitment to the Educational Opportunity Program. The position facilitates the admission process of all service area high schools and community colleges students. Working independently under limited supervision, this position represents San José State University at off-campus/on-campus EOP events.

This position will require travel to other geographic locations and the ability to work on some evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Advise and counsel current and prospective EOP students and their families on general CSU and SJSU-specific admissions and retention requirements.
Work on assigned a caseload of current SJSU and prospective EOP students for academic advising and monitoring of academic progress.
Utilize effective counseling techniques to assist students with sensitive issues pertaining to their personal and academic needs.
Facilitate Summer Bridge workshops providing individual and group academic counseling to students.
Assists with the EOP seminars, developing printed and electronic presentation materials, working with EOP Student and Faculty Mentors, and facilitating SJSU Orientation and Transition Workshops.
Plans, organizes, coordinates, and participates in various visitation programs including on-site visits to high schools and community colleges to audiences of potential SJSU EOP applicants. Coordinates the recruitment visits and activities. Education and Experience
Graduation from four-year college/university or equivalent, and three years of full-time progressively responsible professional student services work experience, preferably advising in a higher education environment. A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and appropriate internship in a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Higher Education advising experience.
Familiarity with higher education academic policies and procedures.
Workshop/presentation experience.
Strong written communication skills. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to interpret and convey CSU, SJSU, UGS, Student Academic Success Services and Academic Advising and Retention Services policies and procedures to ensure student success.
Thorough knowledge of or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of Title V of the California State Education Code, EOP Executive Orders, California State University Executive Orders, San Jose State University and Equal Opportunity Program admissions policies and procedures.
Ability to learn non-resident tuition policies including AB540; ability to acquire and apply knowledge of disability resources and admissions requirements.
Ability to analyze and evaluate applications and transcripts and acquire knowledge of Transfer Admissions Agreements.
Ability to plan and evaluate program services, and to explain, interpret and apply a wide variety of rules and regulations related to admission, residence, registration, and general education requirements.
Demonstrated ability to interact with potential students, parents, high school and community college staff on a one-on-one basis and in-group settings.
General knowledge of counseling techniques.
Ability to design and conduct workshops, and make presentations. Ability to market and recruit students for San Jose State University.
Ability to formulate and recommend solutions to unusual situations and problems using good judgment, a high degree of initiative and creativity.
Ability to work independently and in a team setting. Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances that involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to consider a different point of view.
Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling.
Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
Working knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database management.
Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment.
Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
Strong oral communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills. Posting Date
