Frontline Sales Internship Position

The 3M Frontline Initiative Summer Program offers qualified students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sell for 3M, in a Field Sales or Inside Sales position. For the 10-week assignment, the first 1-1/2 weeks are spent in an orientation and training program. Participants will then spend the remainder of the summer selling, in a designated assignment. The internship runs from late May until the first of August. This is a salaried position, and subsidized housing is provided for those who qualify.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Junior or Senior level standing (Graduating in June 2013, December 2013 or June 2014)
  • Completion of three of the required sales classes in the concentration
  • Currently pursuing a major or minor in Sales and/or Marketing
  • 3.0 or higher GPA (verified through transcripts at time of application)
  • The ability to analyze and solve complex problems, communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Strong aptitude and desire for a career in sales
Interns are expected to achieve specific sales objectives for assigned territory or account subset. Intern expected to develop basic understanding of product lines, customer segments and their needs, competitive products, prices and policies. Responsible for performing work as an individual contributor within a forecast target or as a sales team member.

Inside Sales and Field sales positions can be based anywhere within the continental US.

Each internship will differ based on the 3M market center and business where intern is placed. At completion of the intern assignment, each intern will be expected to have demonstrated the following skill sets:

Territory Management
  • Identified territory quadrants and created coverage plan
  • Conducted evaluation of competitive, penetration and retention accounts
  • Identified appropriate contacts within customer organization
Sales Planning
  • Conducted thorough account research
  • Confirmed scheduled appointments
  • Established call objective
  • Prepared questions in advance
Customer Focus
  • Understood customer's organization and structure
  • Understood customer's manufacturing and distribution
  • Understood customer's brand strategy
  • Understood customer's customer
Selling Skills
  • Asked open and closed feedback questions
  • Limited customer's answers
  • Confirmed customer need(s)
  • Directed conversation to a specific response
  • Gained objective factual information and details
  • Identified customer's buying stage

Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • GED/High School Diploma is required
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree or higher program at an accredited University
  • Current cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Current valid and unrestricted driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Currently a Junior or Senior status if pursuing a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (Graduating in June 2013, December 2013 or June 2014).
  • Currently pursuing a major or minor in Sales and/or Marketing from an accredited university
  • The ability to analyze and solve complex problems, communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Strong aptitude and desire for a career in sales
