This position will be housed in Wythe County. This FCS extension agent, specializing in food safety,will serve several counties specifically focusing on food safety education. The agentâ??s primary focus will be implementing and evaluating food safety educational programs in the counties of Bland, Wythe, Smyth, Carroll, Grayson, and Washington. These audiences should include, but not be limited to consumers, retail establishments, food entrepreneurs, farmers markets and other direct marketers. Specific duties include supporting and expanding current food safety programs offered through VCE and expanding into the counties to be served. These include providing clients with training of safe food handling, preservation and preparation activities. Additionally, this agent will work with the Food Innovations Program to act as a resource for area food processors regarding product food safety, regulatory concerns, and technical food processing assistance. Duties for this position will include working with the localities to assess community needs related to food safety, home food processing, and home food preservation programming, as well as assisting the Consumer Food Safety Program Manager and the Food Innovations Program Director in the development and maintenance of interagency partnerships with business, industry and local agencies to facilitate multi-agency, multi-disciplinary cooperation in food safety programming in these localities, including the local Departments of Health, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and local Departments of Social Services. Collaboration between this agent with faculty from VCEâ??s Agriculture and Natural Resources, Community Viability and 4-H to meet local educational program needs is essential.
Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a relevant area. A master's degree and promotion to Extension Agent are required no later than the sixth year of employment. Experience in developing positive interactions with the public; experience in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs; ability to recruit, train and manage volunteers; excellent communication skills.
