Loudoun County Health Department is currently seeking to fill the position of Public Health Nurse Practitioner. This position will perform patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assignments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code. Successful candidate of this wage/hourly position will work up to 30 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse and as a Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority by the Virginia Board of Health Professions. Must be knowledgeable and skilled in the fundamentals of clinical practice at a nurse practitioner level - taking a history, conducting a physical exam, assessing laboratory and other ancillary data, developing a differential diagnosis for the patient's complaints, and formulating a management plan which may include additional tests, referrals, or treatment prescriptions. Major work areas are family planning to include Implanon insertions, IUD's and emergency contraception, and reproductive health care, office gynecology, sexually transmitted infections (STI), refugee physical examinations of adult and pediatric patients. Must be effective and skilled in educating and counseling patients, especially in the sensitive areas of STI and family planning. Has to work well with nurses who see patients in the STI clinic. Ability to adjust to health needs of culturally diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer some experience as a Nurse or Nurse Practitioner in public health, or as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Bachelor's level nursing degree from an accredited school; MSN from an accredited nurse practitioner program. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are preferred. Working knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer software applications.
