Description

CSC has an exciting opportunity for a senior, highly experienced Linux Sys Admin to support the unique work at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. This job will fully utilize the outstanding candidate's wide-ranging technical expertise within a superior, and completely unique, academic and technical environment. The successful candidate will offer top tier talent to help us support our client in providing efficient, cost-effective computing and networking services, application development, technical advice, and collaboration in informational sciences in support of the research and management programs offered through the NLM.

The successful candidate will become a senior member of our team, which provides support for the development, operation, and maintenance of the backbone computer network and facilities, and provides support, guidance, and assistance for other NLM components in local area networking. In this unique environment, the client provides professional programming services and computational and data processing facilities to meet NLM program needs; operates and maintains the NLM Network Operations and Computing Facility; designs and develops software; and provides extensive customer support, training courses and seminars, and documentation for computer and network users. Our customer helps to coordinate, integrate, and standardize the vast array of computer services available throughout all of the organizations comprising NLM, and serves as a technological resource for other parts of the NLM and for other Federal organizations with biomedical, statistical, and administrative computing needs. As a senior member of the system administration team, the successful candidate will support the installation, optimization, integration, troubleshooting, backup, recovery, modifications, security, and upgrading of IT systems and components to provide services that enable customers to effectively apply IT to business requirements. The right candidate has deep knowledge of tools and mechanisms for distributing new and upgraded software to ensure customers receive current versions of supported software, as they become available. As an expert in the field, the candidate will be able to work with others senior staff to recommend and design systems architecture and topology from both general and specific perspectives.

Specific responsibilities and qualifications include:
Performs as a senior member of the system administration team to support the installation, optimization, integration, troubleshooting, backup, recovery, modifications, security, and upgrading of IT systems and components to provide services that enable customers to effectively apply IT to business requirements. Has knowledge of tools and mechanisms for distributing new and upgraded software to ensure customers receive current versions of supported software, as they become available. Shall be able to work with others senior staff to recommend and design systems architecture and topology from both general and specific perspectives.

Responsibilities:
Support VMWARE infrastructure in a large enterprise environment.

Configure Linux guests in a VMware ESX environment

Design, implement, and evaluate current and future infrastructure initiatives for the highest level of efficiency and performance

SAN/NAS/Storage solutions experience with NetApp, NFS, or related technologies

General Administration of Unix/Linux - Installation, Users Creation, Group Creation, Permissions, Creations of Folders, Mail/SMTP, Web (Apache, Tomcat), FTP, DNS, Proxy, Samba, Firewall (NAT, IP Tables, Packet Filter, IP Filter), LDAP, NFS, NIS, NFS/CIFS/FCP

Perform problem diagnosis, troubleshooting and resolution

Perform new hardware and Linux OS installations, patching and upgrades

Maintain operating systems and associated infrastructure software

Design and document SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for system administration activities

Ability to develop a complete disaster recovery and system backup plan with the responsibility of producing and maintaining all system documentation

Install and maintain Server OS and configuration using tools automated installation like Kickstart and Configuration Management tools like Puppet

Develop automated scripts for monitoring or analyzing the operation of infrastructure, including Nagios scripts, log file reporting, Spacewalk/RedHat Satellite and Puppet scripts

Must be able to participate in a 7/24/365 on-call rotation

Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends and/or during change windows outside of normal business hours

Must be able to work with minimal supervision, is self-motivated and able to define, plan and implement long-term goals, tasks and projects

Ability to technically lead a project through the lifecycle and consult with the customer on business requirements

Work closely with various IT groups including but not limited to project management, database administration, network and security teams, application team and assist in overall architectural design, implementation and troubleshooting

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, or related field preferred

Seven or more years of technical experiences in a client-server environment

Experience working with highly complex systems administration, database administration, and landscape maintenance

Experience working with company products and services

Experience working with company and client documentation and storage procedures

Experience working with highly complex system implementations and organizational processes

Other Qualifications

BS in Computer Science or Engineering or information systems or related field (or equivalent experience) required

7+ years Linux systems administration experience specifically in managing or supporting RedHat and/or Centos Linux in production environments

Scripting skills: Highly skilled in a at least two typical scripting languages (shell/bash, perl, python, ruby)

Experience supporting VMWARE infrastructure in a large enterprise environment.

Experience configuring Linux guests in a VMware ESX environment

Experience working with F5 web load balancing systems

Experience of delivering services in a production environment following ITIL a plus

Cloud Management/Virtualization (i.e. Amazon EC2 and S3 or others) experience a plus

Excellent problem solving, multitasking, troubleshooting skills and attention to details are required to work in this challenging and dynamic environment

Strong analytical and problem solving skills

Leadership skills to guide and mentor the work of less experienced personnel

Strong communication skills

Strong personal computer and business solutions software skills

Good ability to lead and work as part of a team
