      Job Title: GLOBAL APPLIED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

      INGREDIENT INNOVATION SCIENTIST

      Location : Franklin,TN

      Summary:

      This global applied scientist position based in Brentwood, TN leads and conducts innovative and sustainable ingredient research that supports Mars Petcare’s (MPC) global priorities in the area. The jobholder delivers projects through the rigorous science stage gates and peer review processes, creates in depth research reports, and gives definitive presentations to the impacted leadership teams, as well as global and regional research and development communities. The globally funded Applied Science and Technology projects involve designing comprehensive research plans that include thorough literature and patent landscape analysis, breakthrough, disruptive new ingredient technologies and searching for intellectual property (IP) and new ingredient development insights, creating new testing methods, developing and specifying new ingredient supplier manufacturing processes and control measures for industrialization in selected global markets. This scientist position is also responsible up to 15% of their time for conducting detailed new material risk assessments and new ingredient supplier sources and processes for Do it Best or cost savings projects or resolution of new ingredient issues encountered during scale up.

      Principle Accountabilities:
      ·


      Identify novel and sustainable ingredient sources that are affordable for development to ensure a global pipeline of available and affordable alternatives to support MPC’s growth objectives in developed, developing and emerging markets.
      ·
      Lead new sustainable ingredient innovation projects by applying scientific rigor through extensive understanding of food science & technology principles, ingredient characterization methods (physical, microbiological, chemical, and thermal), ingredient safety assessments (physical, chemical, microbiological, thermal), biological and microbiological kinetics and protein chemistry.

      Design comprehensive research plans that include thorough literature and patent landscape analysis, breakthrough, disruptive new ingredient technologies and new testing methods.
      ·
      Design comprehensive experimental design plans and proposals to rigorously and efficiently research and effectively apply novel new ingredients.
      ·
      Identify offensive and defensive intellectual property areas and secure defensive IP opportunities.
      ·
      Create new supplier process qualification procedures which may require special analytical testing, pilot plant testing, testing at the manufacturing sites and define feeding testing.
      ·
      Develop and manage project activities with external suppliers and internal customers related to new technology development and scientific foundation with long term as well as short term deliverables.
      ·
      Design and develop new product prototypes with incorporation of novel ingredients that translate consumer insights and wants into innovative product attributes.
      ·
      Conduct comprehensive shelf life studies to evaluate new ingredients and product shelf life stability as measured through microbiological, physical, chemical and thermal characterization methods to ensure ingredients and products meet the required feeding and quality parameters.
      ·
      Assure the function, form and use of new ingredients by defining & initiating literature reviews, conducting new supplier audits, designing testing plans (in laboratories, pilot plants, supplier sites, analytical, microbiological and animal test designs) and analyzing data to assess business feasibility then recommend appropriate usage and potential food safety, nutrition, quality limitations for new suppliers.

      Ensure ingredient and technology Risk Assessments are completed on all new ingredients and technologies including proper feeding studies, ingredient and product performance measures.
      ·
      Ensure proper safety practices are followed in all testing and production situations.
      ·
      Give project presentations and provide updates to leadership teams, and global and/or regional research and development communities.
      ·
      Communicate regularly with other global and regional pet food ingredient experts to maintain awareness of sister unit commodities, technologies and transfer advances.

      Qualifications
      Minimum Qualifications:
      ·


      Minimum 3 years industrial experience in the food, chemical or pharmaceutical industry.
      ·
      Minimum B.Sc., degree in Bioprocess, Biochemical Engineering and Natural Sciences (Biochemistry, Animal or Plant Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology) with food technology focus, Animal Feed Science, Animal Nutrition, Agricultural Science & Technology, and Food Safety Legislation understanding to be able to assess all functional and food safety risks and processing risks.
      ·
      Strong working knowledge of protein chemistry, biological and microbiological kinetics with fermentation technology experience.
      ·
      Excellent written and oral communication skills.
      ·
      Solid negotiation skills, influential with suppliers and able to rapidly assimilate knowledge of pet food manufacturing and recommend new capital requirements.
      ·
      Strong working knowledge of experimental design, regression analysis and other descriptive and predictive statistics.
      ·
      Basic knowledge of animal nutrition sufficient to evaluate and modify formulations to meet nutritional adequacy and to assess potential product risks resulting from new ingredient applications.
      ·
      Good understanding of consumer and market testing, sensory and nutritional testing.
      ·
      Project planning and management skills.
      ·
      Creative, value-added and scenario thinking.
      ·
      Ability to travel up to 40% of the time.
      ·
      Basic statistics and computer skills sufficient to use data input and retrieval systems, current computer programs and databases (Microsoft Office, Project Management, etc.) and formulation applications.
      ·
      Successful completion of a drug and background screening.
      Critical Competencies:
      ·


      Extensive knowledge of food ingredient science and technology, and food system interactions, complex laboratory and statistical experimental design procedures and techniques.
      ·
      Specialized knowledge of protein chemistry, separation, concentration, purification, fermentation and other transformative technologies.
      ·
      Able to conduct microbiological growth studies, interpret and designate specific testing instrumentation and animal feeding tests to measure quality dimensions for new ingredient specifications.
      ·
      Required to accurately produce product samples (Wet, Dry, Snacks & Treats) in pilot plant, plant, co-manufacturer, or Mars manufacturing supply network under scientifically controlled and repeatable conditions.
      ·
      Physical capability of working in a manufacturing environment and lifting up to 50lbs in weight.
      ·
      Able to travel 20-40% of the time to mostly domestic suppliers (on occasion international), plants, pilot plant, testing labs, universities, kennels, catteries and technical trade shows.
      ·
      Capable of working without distress as needed in ingredient harvesting & processing environments (odors, noise, temperature, harvesting, slaughtering, and trimming operations).
      ·
      Able to formulate or interpret work with Product Development/Formulation Support for product formulations.
      Preferred Qualifications:
      ·


      M.Sc., or Ph.D. degree in Bioprocess, Biochemical Engineering and Natural Sciences (Biochemistry, Animal or Plant Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology) with food technology focus.
      ·
      Understanding of the basics of intellectual property management and patent processes.
      ·
      Good working knowledge of statistical sciences.
      ·
      5 years work experience as ingredient scientist in a food manufacturing facility or at an academic institution or applied science laboratory.
