SUMMARY OF POSITION :

The Quality Technician is responsible for performing specialized work of significant variety and complexity with little supervision to support the Quality Assurance Department. This Technician will work in the Design Quality Engineering Laboratories, supporting reliability testing and EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) testing. Technical assignments may include such things as planning and lay out of work; conducting complex tests or experiments; reading and interpreting drawings and or schematics; preparing, setting up and operating test equipment; evaluating and documenting results; preparing and reviewing reports; gathering, maintaining and analyzing data from multiple sources; performing computations; plotting data; repairing/servicing instruments and equipment; testing of products; troubleshooting instruments and environmental test chambers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Executes test protocols.
  • Uses all basic mechanical and/or electrical test and measurement tools.
  • Performs routine laboratory management tasks including, but not limited to ESD audits, safety audits, and equipment management tasks. Use of custom and off the shelf computer applications for data entry and retrieval and analysis.
  • Performs standard computations and plots data.
  • Sets up, maintains, repairs, calibrates and adjusts complex units and/or test equipment as directed.
  • Gathers and maintains accurate and timely records, samples, technical data and testing documentation.
  • Stays informed about all applicable new rules, regulations and standards and is able to communicate these to other technicians.
  • Demonstrates skill in the use and care of all tools and equipment. Responsible for ensuring bench equipment calibration is up to date.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Quality System Regulations and all other applicable skills.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work area. Must be able to understand and comply with Good Manufacturing Practices, Covidien Safety Polices and 5S.
  • Assists in writing test procedures, operating procedures, local instructions, and test protocols.
  • Recognizes problem areas and brings them to the attention of the Lead or Supervisor.
  • Participates in failure analysis and investigations.
  • Assists in the selection of new equipment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills with other technicians and various support groups including engineering and management.
  • Participates in team discussions, decision making, and team development.
  • Ability to champion new ideas to drive improvements.
  • Practices time management and completes assignments.
  • Responsible for completing personal training requirements on time.
  • May attend meetings to support area, projects, and product changes.
  • Provides technical support to other department staff members.
  • Provides consultation services in technical matters for engineering and other technical personnel outside of the department.


  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

    EDUCATION REQUIRED : AS in electronics, military or college credit equivalence required. Related work experience may be used in substitute.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED : Greater than five (5) years of technical/closely related experience.

    PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of standard technical procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic theory of scientific or technical discipline and ability to understand technical drawings and verbal direction.
  • Skill in technical measurement using standard laboratory tools, such as DVM, oscilloscope, etc.
  • Computer skills - Proficient understanding of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Outlook.
  • Experienced in working in a laboratory environment.


  • SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to interpret displayed results on laboratory instruments.
  • Ability to review and analyze engineering reports.
  • Ability to perform as a team member, participates in team decision making, development and communications.
  • Skills in personal computer spreadsheet, word processor and data analysis tools.


  • ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE :

  • Works with other personnel in resolving technical, procedural, scientific and documentation issues. .
  • Work with other Covidien personnel in managing the day-to-day task in the DQE laboratories. Assists Engineers in setting up test equipment, programming equipment and conducting testing.


  • WORKING CONDITIONS:
    • Usual office environment with sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, stooping and occasionally climbing.
    • Usual laboratory environment where use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) may be required.
    • Frequent use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling use of office machinery.
    • Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the telephone.
    • Visual capacity including depth perception, color vision, and peripheral vision enabling operation of office machinery.
    • Light physical effort required by handling objects up to 35 pounds frequently.
    • Ability to operate light machine tools and laboratory instruments.
