Role Purpose/Accountabilities:Role Purpose:
  • Perform process evaluations in response to challenges or opportunities faced by the business. Must develop innovative solutions to improve the efficiency or expand the capacity of an existing process or lead the process design effort on a new AI if required.
  • Provide front end process designs, process descriptions, equipment specifications, and other process data necessary to enable detailed project design. Drive process design solutions and ensure safe, economical and reliable operation of the completed plant.
  • Provide innovative and cost effective design solutions through networking and optimal use of internal and external resources and vendors.
Accountabilities: - Lead the process design effort on capital projects generally exceeding $40m up to $100MM (singularly or in aggregate)
  • Direct people responsibility: None
  • Indirect people responsibility: Indirect management of numerous design and construction contractor personnel
  • Perform process evaluations in response to challenges or opportunities faced by the business including efficiency or expansion type projects.
  • Incumbent will provide mass and energy balances, physical properties calculations, process simulations, unit operations design and scale-up for new and improved chemical and/or formulation processes, evaluation of candidate processes/routes, and general chemical / formulation plant process design.
  • Provide front end process designs to enable detailed project design.
  • Assist the project team in identifying process risks, scale-up concerns and uncertainty in the process area.
  • Provide functional design activities for equipment sizing/design, construction support, and facility commissioning.
  • Provide PRA assistance for the NAFTA region as needed to support capital projects in the region.
  • Resolve process questions during hazard studies, detailed mechanical design, and start-up of new or modified plants.
  • Provide innovative and cost effective design solutions through networking and optimal use of internal and external resources and vendors.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams to address HSE and process safety, and other regulatory requirements.
  • As applicable, act as an interface with design firms or other agencies to promote best practices.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Critical knowledge: :
  • Undergraduate degree in Chemical engineering
  • Familiarity with process design tools such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, is advantageous
  • Familiarity with processing and formulation equipment, plant layouts, and concepts/procedures for equipment design and sizing.
  • Familiarity with applicable regulations for chemical plant safety and environmental regulations
Critical Experience:
  • 2-5 years of relevant process design or production experience desired
Critical Technical, professional and personal capabilities:
  • Undergraduate degree in Chemical engineering
  • Familiarity with process design tools such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, is advantageous
  • Familiarity with processing and formulation equipment, plant layouts, and concepts/procedures for equipment design and sizing.
  • Familiarity with applicable regulations for chemical plant safety and environmental regulations

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in process design and capability to deliver challenging process design scopes for major capital projects

A fast, responsive and intelligent approach to delivering flexible production capacity will be an essential component in staying ahead of competitors. Timely delivery of those assets is of paramount importance. The critical success factors are for the engineer to have a thorough knowledge of chemical engineering, the ability to simulate the process steps, and to put them together in proper documentation for a scope. The key challenge to the process engineer is to deliver a timely process scope that covers the required basis of the project, and is agreement with the Syngenta Project Process.
