The Department of Extension to Agriculture and Natural Resources with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Field Specialist - Beef. Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Field Specialists provide educational leadership in the application of knowledge, grounded in research-based science, to help Iowans and the agricultural industry prosper. Beef production educational leadership responsibilities focus on the development, delivery, and support for beef production, nutrition and grazing systems, reproduction, genetic selection and enterprise management and analysis. Leadership responsibilities also will focus on helping Iowans work together, create a vision, and make a difference through initiatives that address the complex issues and opportunities vital to Iowa's agricultural future.
This position will specialize in assigned subject-matter area and function in a team setting to develop annual program plans that address client needs and result in the delivery of multi-region and interdisciplinary programming. Team members include extension state specialists, field specialists, and regional extension education directors, and county paid staff; and client groups include beef producers and organizations, landowners, agribusiness, educational institutions, governmental agencies, community colleges, youth and mass media. The position will also be involved in generating program support funds through grant and contract opportunities and user fees. Further, the incumbent will have the opportunity to work with local planning and advisory committees to plan and deliver the Cornbelt Cow-calf conference. This program has been one of the premier educational events for cattle producers in the Midwest for over 40 years. Subject matter leadership will be provided through the College of Agriculture and Life Science's Department of Animal Science with cooperation of the Departments of Economics, Agronomy, Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering and the College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Veterinary and Diagnostic Production Animal Medicine. The candidate will work as part of the Iowa Beef Center.
This position will be filled at the Field Specialist I or II level. In addition to duties above, a Field Specialist II will create and deliver comprehensive and complex programming; conduct needs assessment activities and identify and implement innovative ways to meet clients' needs; take an active role in the development of interdisciplinary programming; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise at the local, area and state level.
The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals and groups. The candidate will also have the ability to establish partnerships with community leaders. Cooperates with and informs Regional Directors, County Councils, County Extension Staff, Field Specialists, and Program Director of their projects and has a positive working relationship with staff and clients in assigned geographical and subject matter areas. Strong organizational skills are also a necessity as this position will be expected to work on multiple projects.
Field Specialist I: Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or closely related field and three years of related experience.
Field Specialist II: Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or closely related field and five years of related experience or a Master's degree in Animal Science or closely related field and three years of related experience.
Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of the position.
Master's degree in field stated above.
Additional years of experience.
Experience in the agri-business industry.
Experience teaching and/or programming efforts in an agricultural field.
Experience communicating with a wide range of audiences, including agricultural clientele and the mass media.
Commensurate with education and experience.
This position will serve Southeast Iowa with the counties of: Appanoose, Cedar, Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Mahaska, Monroe, Muscatine, Poweshiek, Van Buren, Wapello, and Washington. Base location negotiable with selected candidate.
