ServiceAlley.com is a free site that helps you find recommendations for local home service providers from people you know. Service Alley is a startup owned and funded by The Washington Post, and is currently live in the Washington DC, Chicago and Raleigh-Durham metro areas with more markets on the horizon. We’re tackling a big industry with some large established competitors, and we believe that from inside the walls of The Washington Post, we can disrupt those players and own the home service provider recommendation space. We are looking for a talented Front End software engineer who wants to help us takeover this space with some wondrous code!

We are on track for major new product releases this spring and summer and are looking for someone who is eager to learn the joys and pains of growing a startup. This is an amazing opportunity for the right candidate to wear multiple hats on our small and nimble development team , and make a real contribution towards shaping the future of the company. Service Alley – Recommendations From People You Know

MINIMUM RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS

Responsibilities include:
Write testable front-end code in JavaScript and HTML/CSS

Be able to take or come up with a high level idea, and run with it

Survey what's out there in the open source world, evaluate vendor products, or code it yourself

Communicate with technical and non-technical people alike, and show both technical and functional command of what you are doing

Iterative development is your lifeblood, a day without pushing code makes you sad

You're not afraid to crack open an existing code base and bend it to your will

Constantly think of ways to improve the member and provider web experience

You like designing software, and thinking through how it fits into larger efforts before you dive in

Requirements include:
College degree in Computer Science, related technical field, or equivalent experience

1-3 years’ experience working on Front end aspects of a dynamic web application (Ruby on Rails preferred)

High energy personality, creative and not afraid to take initiative

Experience working on front end aspects of dynamic web applications

Demonstrable experience with cross-browser HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and AJAX development

Solid understanding and experience with JavaScript frameworks such as JQuery, JQuery UI

Passion for building modern, intuitive and elegant user interfaces

Fun perspective on life and an entrepreneurial spirit

Ruby on Rails experience; preferred

CSS development with SASS; preferred

Experience working in an agile, iterative development environment; preferred

Experience with Selenium and other front-end testing technologies; preferred
