Provide instruction for the qualification program to personnel whose specific jobs require appropriate knowledge of the technical principles underlying the science of metrology, CMM programming and CMM operation.


In this purpose of this apprentice program is to open the possibilities for the trade of metrology with a concentration in CMM programming and measurement. Basic responsibilities include learning how to establish unique inspection methods for measuring various types of parts including improvising and use of special measurement set ups, fixtures and probes as needed. Learn to develop and evaluate computer programs for measuring parts on CMM’s or other automatic inspection equipment. Achieve accurate, repeatable, and productive inspection methods. Using statistical procedures, where appropriate, evaluate differences in measurement methods and recommend correct methods to resolve measurement credibility problems. Progress will be monitored in three month intervals for knowledge and demonstrated progress towards full competency with the goal of becoming a Metrology Technician. Metrology Technicians work in a team environment and regularly interface with machinists, engineers and quality, yet program and operate CMM’s independently and therefore must be self starters.

Responsible for continual evaluation of measuring equipment to assure acceptable accuracy and precision is maintained in shop environment and take action to correct unacceptable conditions.

Duties are varied and require considerable judgment to devise new methods or adapt procedures to work to achieve mutual objectives of Quality Assurance, Product Engineering and Production. Assist and support various shop personnel in use of inspection equipment, methods and procedures. Provide hand on support in calibration, sample evaluation and other Metrology value added services such as positive material identification and nondestructive testing.


High school graduate with additional technical courses equivalent to one year college training, and can demonstrate specific knowledge of blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
Exposure to machine programming and programming of coordinate measurement machines (CMM) is beneficial.


Individual must have one year of machine shop, or product validation experience in a manufacturing or laboratory environment using mechanical measurement devices. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and accuracy of work is paramount. Candidate must be competent in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Prior experience in the interpretation of drawings and specifications a must.
