The University of New Mexico Cancer Center (UNMCC) is a statewide provider of cancer care and is influential in the cancer field throughout New Mexico and the nation. The Official Cancer Center of New Mexico, the UNMCC is the only academic healthcare facility dedicated to both cancer research and patient care. We are also the only cancer center in New Mexico designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and one of just 67 premier NCI-designated centers nationwide. We employ the largest staff of research scientists and clinicians in the state and participate in approximately 300 clinical trials at any one time. Our clinical and laboratory researchers were awarded $60 million in funding in 2011 and our clinic saw over 15,800 cancer patients from every county in New Mexico in more than 137,000 patient visits. We currently serve 65 percent of the adults and virtually all of the children in New Mexico who are newly diagnosed with cancer. The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention at the UNMCC is seeking a full-time Health Sciences Senior Research Specialist for a large epidemiologic study of breast cancer biology, treatment, and survival. Under indirect supervision of the study Principal Investigator, the selected candidate will apply advanced, highly specialized problem-solving and data collection skills in order to perform the following duties: Lead and participate in rigorous, on-going training sessions to master complicated study protocols, including: study-specific coding rules, data management and tracking, and quality control checks Oversee and perform abstraction of comprehensive breast cancer diagnosis and treatment related information from electronic and paper patient medical charts within hospitals, clinics, and MD offices in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe region Apply advanced understanding of coding guidelines, including knowledge of the AJCC6 Breast Cancer Staging Guidelines and the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology, to record data accurately and completely in over 1,000 fields Provide expertise regarding collection of specific cancer treatment data, including development and revision of data collection forms, coding sheets, and procedures Employ professional expertise to make and to defend coding judgment calls (e.g., cancer staging calls based on incomplete pathology data, location of additional treatment data given incomplete charts, identifying additional sources of pathology data, etc.) Meticulously extract and record medical record data and enter into electronic database Conduct data quality control audits, develop and revise QA tools, and oversee process improvements Communicate regularly with study data-entry personnel to improve the validity of study data by clarifying abstraction notes This position requires careful attention to detail, a strong work ethic, excellent written and oral communication skills, professional expertise in medical coding of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the ability to function both independently and as part of a research team. Dependable transportation for travel within the Albuquerque/Santa Fe is required. Certification as a Cancer Tumor Registrar a plus. Master's degree with at least 3 years of directly related experience. OR Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of directly related experience OR High school diploma or GED; at least 9 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Current National Tumor Registrar Association Certification At least one year previous experience in data collection or medical record review in a clinical setting At least two years previous experience with prospective or retrospective research studies involving collection of medical/public health data Previous medical coding experience, including CPT-4, ICD-9, and HCPCS coding systems. Experience conducting quality control audits of information extracted from medical records Experience with computer data entry for research purposes
