We are looking for a Controller that will serve as a much needed team member to our hospital administration/management team. The Controller leads and coordinates all financial activities of our veterinary hospital system that includes a large 24/7 veterinary hospital with several diverse practice groups and our neighborhood clinic(s). The chosen candidate is responsible for implementation of all financial policies, procedures and internal controls; also responsible for risk management and cash management.

  • Develop strategic and operational plans to achieve results and ensure alignment with hospital system goals and objectives
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Manage outsourced functions
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting team, including design of an organization structure adequate for meeting team’s goals and objectives


  • Ensure accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Process Payroll in a timely manner
  • Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
  • Maintain and manage chart of accounts
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Oversee asset management and work with other functional units to reduce assets through effective inventory control practices


  • Oversee application of accounting principles, practices and procedures concerning the maintenance of fiscal records and preparation of financial reports
  • Manage business planning and forecasting, variance analysis, and cost control
  • Manage general accounting, practice group accounting, cost accounting, and budgetary control
  • Generate accurate and timely budgets, forecasts and operational performance reports
  • Track and report key performance indicators; evaluate operating results in terms of cost, budget, operation policies, trends and increases profit opportunities
  • Set goals for practice groups and hospital system, manage execution and measure results
  • Provide ad hoc analysis and reporting and promote the practice of continuous improvement
  • Prepare financial and management reports, present findings, and recommend courses of action


  • Identify, document and report potentially fraudulent or unethical business practices
  • Comply with local, state, federal governments reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Conduct internal financial audits on a regular, consistent basis


  • Partner with hospital management team
  • Perform other duties as required Job Requirements
  • Understanding of finances, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepting Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Understanding of short-term and long-term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and profitability analysis of veterinary services and products
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections
  • Ability to motivate teams to deliver quality veterinary care and to simultaneously manage several projects
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings
  • Understanding of automated financial and accounting reporting systems

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a senior-level finance or accounting position in small business setting (3 years in a corporate setting only does NOT meet this requirement)


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or related field required; Master’s degree is same fields preferred
