Job Description:
Performs assigned duties involving the processing of medication charges and credits. Utilizes computer or manual billing system to process medication charges from various inpatient and outpatient areas. Utilizes computer system to process patient medication credits in a timely manner. Returns appropriate medications to stock and disposes of others according to approved procedure. Performs assigned duties involving the Pyxis MedStation system and the Pyxis Controlled Substances Safe. Prepares a Pyxis MedStation refill and then completes the Pyxis MedStation refill process once it has been verified by a pharmacist. Checks for and removes outdated and discontinued patient-specific medications from Pyxis MedStations on a daily basis. Maintains efficient Pyxis MedStation utilization by performing loads/unloads, drawer/pocket recoveries, refrigerator temperature monitoring, etc. Reviews Pyxis Charges and Credits daily and manually credit and/or reprocess charges if necessary. Investigate and resolves Pyxis MedStation discrepancies with the involvement of nursing staff and pharmacists if necessary. Utilizes and maintains the Pyxis Controlled Substances Safe including medication removal and inventory/quality control. Performs various dispensing and delivery duties involving inpatient orders, outpatient orders and interdepartmental stock medication orders. Fills and delivers medication orders. Fills and delivers "over the counter" medication orders for employees. Manufactures unit dose medications using an automated packager and barcodes medications using barcoding equipment. Fills or provides second-check, then delivers interdepartmental stock medication orders. Labels premixed intravenous solutions and aseptically compounds various intravenous solutions. Performs various stocking duties within the pharmacy department. Stocks assigned pharmacy areas daily. Puts away purchase orders in a timely manner. Stocks the anesthesia boxes(in pharmacy)and/or emergency trays, kits and carts in a timely manner. Performs various inventory duties involving order placement, outdate removal and price updates. Notifies pharmacy buyer of needed medications or supplies and/or completes a purchase order (either electronically or manually) to the appropriate wholesaler or company. Updates medication prices in computer as assigned. Stores and monitors medications, removing any outdated, improperly stored or recalled medications from stock. Performs various pharmacy related duties in order to contribute to the hospital's six aims for quality improvement (safe, timely, patient-centered, efficient, effective and equitable). Maintains the pharmacy department in a clean and orderly manner (empty recycling, wash compounding equipment, clean pneumatic tube carriers, etc). Triages telephone calls in a prompt, courteous and effective manner. Assists pharmacists in maintaining order/patient information and efficient order flow in the Pharmacy Order Management System (POMS). Assists in training new pharmacy employees and/or pharmacy students. Performs monthly floor inspection in a thorough manner. Utilizes appropriate software for reporting safety events in a timely manner. Successfully completes organizational training and departmental competency programs as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
Clerical, computer, mechanical and mathematical aptitudes required. A minimum of six months experience in a similar position of similar responsibility preferred. If the applicant has no post-secondary education, a minimum of two years of experience preferred. High School graduate/GED required. Pharmacy Technician Certification required within one year of hire or enrolled in a Pharmacist program. Certified Pharmacy Technician status preferred. A minimum of one year of college in a science related field or the completion of a Pharmacy Technician vocational program preferred.

License or Certification: Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of Minnesota or Registered Intern in the state of Minnesota required immediately after hire.
