Provides consultation to the health care team on issues of education and counseling and initiates appropriate referrals to social Work Service and other departments and agencies as necessary.

Duties

Utilizing the nursing process, and protocols mutually agreed upon by the nurse practitioner and physician preceptors, provides and advanced level of family primary care and preventive health services to assigned panel of patients including the diagnosis and management of chronic stable illnesses and acute minor illnesses to include the following activities:

a. Perform routine history and physical examination to assess the physical and psychosocial health status of adult patients and family members, to include both genders and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings.

b. Orders laboratory, radiological or other diagnostic studies a defined in the credentials scope of practice.

c. Evaluates assessment data to make prospective decisions regarding care and treatment in collaboration with physicians and other health care team members.

d. Prescribes and refills medications as designated from the prescribing list approved by the Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees and Hospital Commanding Officer.

e. Initiates referrals to other medical/nursing services and agencies, including but not limited to diet therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and social work services.

f. Educates and counsels patients and families/significant others using the theories and principles of adult education regarding preventive and treatment aspects of health care.

g. Provides psychological and therapeutic support to patients and families/significant others to facilities adaptation to illness, death and dying, and lifestyle changes for health risk reduction.

Develops or participated in the development of appropriate teaching material to facilitate the education of patients, families, significant others, and /or staff members.

Supports and assists in research activities conducted in the Department of Medicine, Department of Nursing, in addition to conducting original nursing research.

Supports, conducts, and attends nursing in-service programs and other Department of Nursing and Department of Internal Medicine programs.

Maintains current licensure and nurse practitioner certification, and maintains a program of self-professional growth and development by conference/in-service attendance, literature review, pertinent professional organization membership and self-study.

Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicant must meet the following qualification requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/SEC-IV/B/GS0600/0610.htm .

Professional knowledge of a wide range of nursing concepts, principles, and practices to perform highly specialized nursing assignments of advanced nature and considerable difficulty requiring extended specialize training and experience.

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position.
Requires rotating shift work.

Exposure to contagious diseases is commonplace. Handling of blood and other body fluids of patients infected with HIV and other bloodborne diseases are required on a daily basis.
