POSITION: Director of external giving




Great Hearts Academies has a history of fundraising success with over $35 million raised since 2004 for regional/Arizona operations and expansion. GHA is currently supported by national and local donors and foundation and is proud of sustained support from its parent base.

As Great Hearts Academies enters its next stage of growth into new regions, it is also entering a new stage of growth for Arizona. This plan for growth requires a renewed and ambitious strategic campaign to engage the Arizona philanthropic community around the Great Hearts mission and vision for education.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of External Giving will develop and execute on an integrated strategy that enhances GHA’s profile with potential investors, grantees and other relevant stakeholders in the greater Arizona community, and will work closely with the CEO, CDO and Board of Directors in ramping up the organization’s external philanthropic capacity. He/she reports directly to the CDO.

Partner with the executive team and Board to execute on a fundraising plan to secure $5-10M of additional commitments over the next five years.

Play a special lead role in external fundraising for Teleos and Maryvale Prep.

Research and cultivate new donor contacts through school tours, special events, etc.

Develop and write new proposals to donors/investors.

Managing donor relations, including creating written reports and updates for all donors.

Engage in direct major donor solicitations.

Coordinate with Arizona development staff on deployment of parental giving programs and local fundraising initiatives, including capital campaigns.


Deep interest in classical education as a touchstone of academic integrity: posits Great Hearts “Philosophical Pillars” (see website)

Deep interest and passion in helping transform K-12 public education

A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in liberal arts, business, or law

Superior written and extemporaneous speaking skills.

Highly organized and able to work in a fast paced environmentExperienced and comfortable in a variety of situations, interacting with current and potential donors

Non-profit fundraising experience is preferred but not required

Based in Phoenix
