Canonical has recently launched its Ubuntu operating system for the mobile industry. We launched Ubuntu for smartphones at the CES show in Las Vegas in early January. Ubuntu on smartphones is stunning, beautifully designed, and intuitive. It offers a much improved and affordable smartphone experience for the consumer market. For the enterprise market it offers a totally new “superphone” solution: the high-end smartphone with Ubuntu becomes a fully fledged desktop when connected to a keyboard and monitor. Ubuntu on smartphones received excellent reviews, and we are in the process of discussing go-to-market plans with early launch partners.

We are now looking for a co-marketing, co-branding and retail marketing expert to help us take Ubuntu to the consumer market together with our selected OEM and operator partners.

Role Summary
The role of the Co-Marketing Manager is a six month contracting role as part of the phone sales and marketing project team - with a potential permanent role at the end of the contract period. The Co-Marketing Manager will drive all planning, guidelines and implementation around collaborative marketing with phone hardware OEMs and network operators. He/she has previous experience of working with a software vendor or hardware OEM - and understands well the value chain of different players in the mobile industry. He/she will also have an excellent understanding on how to drive up software sales through the right type of retail and POS activity that leads to increased sales and brand loyalty.

The role will coordinate the marketing engagements with partners (OEMs and mobile network operators) related joint go-to-market plans, product offerings and retail promotions.

The role will focus specifically on:

  • Drafting of co-marketing / co-branding and MDF guidelines and rules of play. This will be done in cooperation with Head of Mobile Marketing, Head of Brand, phones sales and product management.

  • Engage with customers directly and in this role coordinate, plan and execute co-branding and co-marketing related activities with selected partners (e.g. mobile operators and OEMs)

  • Draft and execute go-to-market plan/s with lead partners including also event marketing and retail presence.

  • Design plans for retail and POS that lead to increased sales of smartphones with Ubuntu inside. This includes also POS staff training, co-branding, testing and trialling schemes, and other activity that creates stickiness for the Ubuntu brand.

  • Manages MDF funding including budgeting, agreement on expenditure vs sales, measuring and tracking impact - and corrective actions where needed to ensure that the MDF funding is well placed to support the sales of Ubuntu for smartphones.

  • Expertise
    The Co-Marketing Manager will have strong understanding of the mobile phone markets and how vendors as well as operators segment and market both services and devices to their end users. The person will ideally have more than 8 years of experience in co-marketing, co-branding and retail marketing in the mobile services and devices business areas. Knowledge of European markets at large, Asia, USA and Latin America beneficial.

    The role will report to the Head of Mobile Marketing and will work day to day with the the devices product management, sales & business development and design teams, as well as the overall communications and marketing team members.
