Overall Objective

Support the process development R&D function providing direct process development engineering support. Role includes providing process development expertise to a wide range of innovation, cost savings and quality improvement projects from ideation through commercialization, and identifying and commercializing new enabling technologies for Beam. This position provides broad exposure to operations, marketing/business teams, finance and other functional partners.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with product development scientists and plant engineers to meet project success criteria. (Includes all project stages from concept development, lab/pilot plant creation, process design, commercialization/scale-up to full production).

Plan, execute, review and report on process design activities involved in new product/process development projects and process/product improvement projects. Write, review, and issues process specifications to support work.

Make recommendations on process design and materials (e.g. hoses, gaskets, liners, filter materials) product design, equipment selection and capital recommendations.

Initiate, design, and lead technical investigations into low to moderate complexity processing problems requiring new and innovative solutions.

Plan and execute experiments using established laboratory/pilot plant/operations methods; interpreting results and translate into solutions. Follow best practices and SOPs for development and suggest process improvements for procedures and practices.

Partner with external suppliers and development companies as required to extend process possibilities and identify, evaluate and implement new enabling technologies.

Assists in identifying and creating innovative new processes and platforms aligned to overall Beam strategy and go to market process (Follow the Bottle).

Partner with Operations to identify internal and external process scenarios that best minimize capital investment while maximizing existing asset utilization.

Participate actively in team-building and broader Beam and external initiatives.

Qualifications

Candidate Profile

MS Chemical Engineering/Food Engineering or related with two years experience, or B.S. degree with 4+ years experience.

Minimum 2 years work experience in food and/or beverage industry. Experience with carbonated or still beverages, and distilled spirits a strong plus.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in creating and working a plan for assigned projects.

Ability to develop strong cross functional relationships within R&D as well as with Marketing, Operations, Sourcing, Engineering, etc. to drive strong collaboration and results.

Proficient skills in Excel, Word and related programs for organizing data and summarizing test results

Solid analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to develop strong working knowledge of lab operating procedures

Strong verbal and written communication skills, including timely follow-up and commitment to deliverables, and openness to give and receive feedback.

Must be able to consume limited quantities of alcoholic beverage samples in accordance with evaluation/research needs.

Self starter, flexible, comfortable working in unstructured face-paced environment, able to manage multiple priorities effortlessly

Team player with collaborative style and good listening and partnering skills. Culturally sensitive, with ability to work in a global multicultural cross functional organization, requiring ability to work effectively across cultures, time zones to accommodate global responsibilities.

Ability to travel globally to partner in project work with internal and external clients, as well as support implementation at Beam facilities – travel approx. 10-30% with half local Kentucky operations and Chicago corporate office, and balance other Beam Global locations.

Physically fit for work primarily in a lab, pilot plant and manufacturing environments, which includes long periods of standing, moving, and carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds.
