Janssen Research & Development is recruiting for an Associate Scientific Director, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Spring House, PA.

The Immunology Therapeutic Area of Janssen Research & Development is committed to delivering transformational solutions for patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The goal of the newly-formed Disease Integrative Biology group, within the Immunology Therapeutic Area (TA), is to create a critical platform for deep biological disease understanding that will allow the Immunology TA, through enabling its R&D pipeline, to maintain its leadership position in providing treatments for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Disease Integrative Biology will establish a new R&D operating model, in which a streamlined core internal team will directly engage a large expert network of collaborators to meet the responsibilities of the function. The Disease Integrative Biology group is seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientific Director (ACD) to take a leading role in creating the platform for biological disease understanding of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Psoriasis (PsO) and, utilizing these platforms to impact the R&D efforts focused on the IBD and PsO near- and long-term portfolios. In this role, the candidate will be responsible for developing and executing the biology strategy for building the disease platforms to will enable the biological understanding of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Psoriasis (PsO).

The ACD will be expected to lead the utilization of the disease platforms to identify and validate new mechanisms for therapeutic intervention and, inform on the current portfolio in alignment with the disease area strategies. The scope includes understanding disease etiology with the goal of identifying points of intervention that may enable cure and potential prevention of disease onset. The ACD will be expected to lead a matrixed, cross-functional, internal team. (S)he will also be expected to communicate clearly and liaise flawlessly with internal R&D business partners and functional teams including the Disease Area and portfolio project teams.

The ACD will be expected to independently identify and lead external relationships and collaborations. There will be management responsibilities of direct reports. This invividual will be accountable for operational excellence, including consistency and transparency of all processes among partner lines with the goal to build consensus support for opportunities and ensure high and consistent quality of documentation and presentation to Senior Management for decision making. This includes i) the provision of scientific/clinical expertise and education as necessary to key partner lines within the TA (including, but not limited to, Research, Clinical, Commercial, Business Development, Legal), ii) tracking of progress/impact of funded research, and iii) regular updates of the group's progress. There is an expectation for the candidate to pro-actively contribute in rendering the TA and Research Immunology the preferred partner of choice within Academia and represent Research Immunology to external partners and maintain a professional environment during the initial contact as well as continued discussions. (S)he will be expected to represent Janssen R&D/Immunology TA/Research Immunology at conferences as well as scientific and other business-related meetings as required (including presentations).

Qualifications

The position requires a PhD and/or MD with a minimum of 6 years of post-doctoral experience with strong scientific credentials for research in IBD or a related-field.The candidate must have a proven publication record in applying multidisciplinary approaches to understand disease etiobiology, preferably IBD, and have a working knowledge of the application of research tools to further the understanding of diseases with a proven publication record in applying multidisciplinary approaches to understand disease etiology. A working knowledge of in vivo models is desired but not required.
Bench-based, hands-on research is required. Experience in leading multi-functional teams is essential for this position. Experience in working within a matrixed resource model is essential for this position. Excellent communication and people management skills are required. The candidate will be expected to contribute to project teams, with clearly defined critical paths, milestones and timelines. Familiarity with state-of-the-art computational biology methods to enable effective collaboration with bioinformaticians with the goal of developing testable hypotheses and implementing experimental approaches to test the hypotheses is desired. Experience in Immunology is preferred. Previous experience working with external collaborators in an industry setting is desired. Participation in pre-competitive consortia is desired. A background in drug discovery is desired. This position is located in Spring House, PA.
