Under general direction, formulates and defines the scope and objectives for new or existing applications or programs requiring custom development. Typically carries out assignments with minimal direction from a project manager or programming development manager. Works with stakeholders to gather requirements for developmental programs. Designs and develops technology and models for development projects as assigned. Performs code testing on components and works to ensure appropriate implementation standards are met. Evaluates design alternatives for development cost and solutions using various methods. Typically works with business analysts, project managers, and end-users to ensure that delivery expectations are met. Provides support and maintenance for existing applications and participates in production support during business hours and pre-launch hours. Resolves customer complaints and responds to suggestions for improvements and enhancements from end-users. Demonstrates programs. Provides appropriate written documentation of project development and programming code.

About the Unit
The Computation Institute (CI) at The University of Chicago seeks a programmer to assist in the design and development of Globus Online (, an innovative cloud-based, Web accessible, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) system to support big data management for science and biomedicine, along with associated computation-, and collaboration-intensive research activities. The service aims to bring sophisticated capabilities to research communities that to date may have found such resources to be out of reach without specialized personnel or infrastructure.

Unit Job Summary
SaaS Backend Programmer 2: Reporting to the Software Development Manager in the Computation Institute, the focus of this position will be to assist in the creation and operation of backend REST services for state-of-the-art SaaS applications, through the use of advanced technologies and techniques from Web and Cloud computing (e.g. e.g. Python, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Javascript, HTML, CSS, AJAX, REST, Chef, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Amazon Web Services, etc.), Grid and High-Performance computing (e.g. Globus Toolkit, Condor, HADOOP, etc.), and computational science and bioinformatics, to deliver easy to use, end-to-end solutions.

Responsibilities include:

Architecture and Design: As a senior member of the Globus software team, lead and/or participate in the definition and documentation of requirements, architecture and design of complex systems, based on knowledge of relevant software technologies being developed and/or used in commercial and scientific communities.

Software Development: As part of an Agile Scrum development team, develop, test, document, deploy and maintain high quality software, including portions of web applications (scalable, cloud-hosted Software-as-a-Service system), REST interfaces, command-line interfaces, desktop and mobile clients, and distributed resource integration software. Carry out assignments with minimal direction from the project manager or technical lead.

Software as a Service Operations: Under general direction, as part of the development-operations (dev-ops) team, deploy, operate, monitor, and maintain production, 24x7-available Software as a Service.

Support and User Services: The Globus User Services team has responsibility for providing Globus users with first and second line support services, as well as for providing professional services including integration, customization, deployment, training, operations, consulting and project management. This position must work in close collaboration with the User Services team, and directly with end users, to help provide these support and professional services.

Team Coordination and Professional Development: Maintain a working knowledge of relevant software technologies being developed and/or used in commercial and scientific communities. Participate in team coordination and development activities, including project planning, project reporting, recruitment, training new staff, and mentoring junior software developers and students.

Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or another computer related field, or at least six years of professional programming experience required.

Advanced degree in mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field preferred.

Three years of relevant programming experience with Python, Javascript, C, C++ and/or Java required.
Experience developing, implementing, debugging and maintaining applications.
Experience with Linux required.
Experience with version management and bug tracking tools required.
Experience with SQL, relational or NoSQL databases required.

Experience developing Web based and client/server applications preferred.
Experience with Agile Scrum development processes preferred.
Experience with test-driven development preferred.
Experience in Cloud Computing preferred.
Experience in Grid Computing preferred.
Experience with Web technologies such as REST, HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, PHP preferred.
Experience with Web security technologies such as OAuth, OpenID, SSL and PKI preferred.
Experience with XML, XSLT, Xpath, and XQuery technologies preferred.

Knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of software development required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Ability to use standard software development applications and tools required.
Ability to use analytical and quantitative skills and diagnostic techniques to resolve problems required.
Ability to manage complex technical details required.
Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical staff required.
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment required.
Confidentiality related to sensitive University matters such as, strategic initiatives, trade secrets, quiet periods, and scientific discoveries yet to be put in the public domain required.
Ability to work on a flexible schedule which will include occasional late night and/or weekend hours required.
