Salary:

This position is in pay schedule/range 06-09. Starting pay is $11.875 per hour, plus excellent benefits. A six-month probationary period is required.

You will be joining a highly experienced staff at a public health laboratory within the wonderful academic setting of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The position is located at 2601 Agriculture Dr., Madison, WI 53718. For more information, please visit http://www.slh.wisc.edu/ . Job Duties: This position provides support services to all departments of the Environmental Sciences Section (ESS) at the State Laboratory of Hygiene. The major responsibilities include the receipt, processing and distribution of Environmental, Bacteriological, Radiological and Toxicological samples. This position must document the condition of Environmental samples including, but not limited to, Inorganic, Organic, Radiological and Bacteriological samples received at the Laboratory (following guidelines established by the Wisconsin State Laboratory Certification Program Code). Additional responsibilities include, providing customer support to various DNR program representatives (including Law Enforcement Wardens, Water Supply Staff, Lake Management Coordinators, etc.). This includes taking telephone requests and assuring that forms and testing kits meet the exact needs of each of these testing programs. Other duties include preparation of testing kits for all departments of the ESS, maintenance of an address data base, operation of computerized mail management system, the UPS World Ship System, Spee-dee Shipping software, and preparation of airbills from commercial shipping vendors. This position consistently demonstrates exceptional customer service and routinely uses computer, data entry and training skills.

Data entry experience and some knowledge of science terminology is preferred.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of biological safety procedures; specimen handling and splitting using OSHA regulations; basic environmental terminology (e.g., Inorganic and Organic Chemical), some toxicological terminology; general receiving & shipment processes and documentation procedures; chemical absence/presence indicators (e.g., pH test strips, acid/base indicators); general office practices (e.g., office etiquette, filing, telephone courtesy, customer service, records maintenance); and operation of shipping and mailing equipment (e.g., meters, scales, strapping machine, allocator, automated mail machine and shipping software). Basic computer and related software/hardware skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, data entry, label making, spreadsheets, printers, e-mail). Basic operation of office equipment (e.g., photocopier, fax machine, scanning equipment, numbering machines, label makers, cutters, calculators). Skilled in tracking/monitoring results; navigating information and sampling results, customer service skills; interpersonal communication skills; and basic training.
