PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: Alcorn State University seeks a highly-motivated, inclusive and innovative leader for the position of Dean of Libraries and Information Resources. The Dean is the chief administrator for the University Libraries leading the mission to continue the evolution of a 21st century research and information resources library at Alcorn. The individual must be committed to providing user-centered service delivery, and will work collaboratively with Deans, Chairs, faculty, department directors and other campus constituents to articulate a vision, develop strategic direction, and assess service quality for the Libraries.

SCOPE OF RESPONSBILITY: The Dean is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of the library; formulating and assessing library services, policies, and diversity initiatives; transforming and implementing new services, collections, and instruction; and, increasing emphasis on data management, e-science, special collections and archives, digital collections, and scholarly communications. Research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University are significant areas of responsibility for this position.

Facilitates the continuing transformation of the University Libraries into a knowledge commons that integrates diverse resources, enhances instruction, seeks new opportunities, engages with community, collaborates with university departments/units, and sustains a vibrant research and learning community;
Creates an environment that facilitates research and scholarly activity with an understanding of innovative and traditional methods of information dissemination;
Articulates a shared vision that promotes the University's and the Libraries' missions;
Fosters an organizational and educational climate that promotes and celebrates diversity;
Engages in strategic planning, policy making, budget and management of library resources;
Enforces policies and regulations adopted by the Board, the offices of the President and University Provost, and the Faculty Senate;
Works with library and department heads, as well as external sources, to identify, evaluate, and implement programs that improve services and facilities, enhances the quality of resources; and increases operational efficiency within the libraries;
Supports and promotes the development of a viable information literacy program;
Builds visibility and image recognition through collaboration with the university community;
Cultivates external relations and fundraising opportunities with public and private sectors in support of the University Libraries' programs;
Serves as personnel officer for the libraries with initial responsibility for recruitment, hiring, retention, and evaluation of the library staff;
Maintains and upgrades library facilities, equipment and services;
Participates actively in local, state, and national library organizations;
Other related duties as assigned by the Executive Vice President/Provost and/or University President. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The Dean of University Libraries must be able to work collaboratively and effectively communicate with the administration, faculty, staff, and students.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills and a commitment to public service.
Comprehensive knowledge of the mission and role of the library in an academic environment.
Involvement in professional associations and record of achievement in research or publishing.
