Longwood University is an institution of higher learning dedicated to the development of citizen leaders who are prepared to make positive contributions to the common good of society. In support of this mission the Office of Facilities Management invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Institutional Chauffeur Lead Driver / Transportation Operator III. This person will be responsible for: ensuring timely support to all university programs for in-state and out-of-state trips; servicing bus and coach vehicles for safe transportation for scheduled trips; cleaning vehicles and ensuring pre- and post-trip inspections are completed for each trip; and working closely with the Motor Pool Shop to ensure repairs are completed in a timely manner.

  • Ensure trips are planned for most efficient routing
  • Keep an accurate log
  • Provide shuttle for airport runs, campus program shuttle for special events and all university functions
  • Display a positive attitude, professionalism, respect, and courtesy to associates inside and outside of the University
  • Assist in development of weekly schedules based on university trip requests
  • Ensure flexibility in driver hours that will meet program and group schedules
  • Provide trip information for proper data collection
  • Work closely with Motor Pool Supervisor, Agency Transportation Officer and Manager in the development of driver performance improvements and provide input for new hires
  • Strive for continuous improvement, recognizing and analyzing issues that may affect the department and approach higher management with alternatives to these issues
  • Work with Fuel Transportation during times when large bus or coach services are minimal
  • Assist with hauling biomass fuels for steam plant operation
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive experience of behind the wheel driving coaches/buses and/or tractor trailers or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge and experience in coach/bus operations, tractor trailer operations and general knowledge of coach, bus, and tractor trailer components
  • Knowledge of trip routing, managing trip logs and detailed reporting
  • Knowledge of DOT interstate motor vehicle operation requirements for other states in which travel may be required (NC, SC, WV, MD, etc)
  • Comply with Federal, State, Local and insurance carrier rules and regulations and adhere to department/unit safety practices and procedures
  • Basic computer skills for utilization of trip software and communications
  • Strong customer service skills, must respond immediately to customer requests
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and schedules
  • Strong planning and communication skills
  • Ability to work alternate shifts based on business need and accommodate any necessary temporary shift demands
  • Work in a safe manner to avoid accidents
  • Promptly report and correct safety issues
  • No more than one chargeable vehicle accident per year
  • All vehicle accidents must be reported immediately to your immediate Supervisor and the Transportation Officer
  • No more than one personal accident per year
  • No more than one written report pertaining to not following written safety rules (i.e. not wearing seat belts, not wearing safety glasses, etc.)
  • Dedicated to high quality work, trustworthy, motivates others, is a reliable communicator of work related information and avoids gossip
  • Actively contributes to group work activities, participates in decision making, supports group, accepts and provides praise and constructive criticism with equal effectiveness
  • Driver shall be required to wear uniform dress (provided by the University) for all formal transportation. On occasion, Business Casual may be acceptable and these occasions will be noted by the Supervisor
  • Ability to accommodate overnight travel
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time to perform driving duties
  • Ability to handle noisy environment without interference with driving duties for up to 56 students and/or faculty/staff utilizing the bus service
  • Ability to drive in all types of road conditions, heavy traffic, interstates, etc
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Class A with Passenger endorsement CDL and medical examiner's certificate is required
  • Copy of driving record required to be submitted at interview
  • Significant experience of behind the wheel driving coach/buses preferred
  • Verification and approval of driving record by Longwood University Police Department prior to employment and annual verification during employment
  • Will be required to work when necessary, even in the event the university is closed, and on holidays, weekends, etc.
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor
