The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is looking for a dedicated security-minded criminal justice professional to assume the responsibilities of Correctional Program Specialist . Implements direct contact services to offenders assigned to a specific living unit & caseload; prepares initial social summaries & makes appropriate referrals to treatment units within the institution; coordinates activities with other treatment units, volunteers &/or community service providers; writes reports & correlates data as needed including classification data, pre-parole summaries, admission summaries, parole risk assessments & security designation forms; develops, implements & conducts unit programming for inmates on designated caseload; evaluates programming efforts upon completion of programming; compiles visitation lists & collects personal & family information; coordinates & arranges for outside agencies & community service providers to augment existing institutional programming & services; monitors student interns & volunteers in the absence of the unit manager; serves on various institutional committees.
A minimum of 76 hours of unit management coverage per week per unit, will be required from unit staff, excluding secretaries and unit officers, to include late nights and weekends. In order to achieve 76 hours of coverage, the Unit Team, when developing proposed schedules, must stay within the following guidelines: · There should be at least 13 hours of unit coverage Monday through Thursday · There should be at least 8 hours of coverage Friday through Sunday · Schedules for week day coverage (Monday-Thursday) should not begin before 7:00 AM or end before 8:00 PM · Schedules for weekend coverage (Friday through Sunday) should not begin before 7:00 AM or end before 3:00 PM · There will be no unit coverage provided on holidays · Unit Managers should work at least 1 shift per week that ends no earlier then 8:00 PM · Unit Managers should work at least one 8 hour weekend (Saturday or Sunday) shift per month · Unit Managers should schedule themselves time for meaningful rounds and interaction with unit correctional officers during third shift monthly “Step one of the Correctional Program Specialist (Case Manager) classification is a probationary period. All employees hired, promoted, demoted or transferred into the Correctional Program Specialist (Case Manager) classification on or after the first day of the pay period including July 1, 2009, shall have a 365 calendar day probationary period, unless mutually agreed to otherwise by the parties.”
Completion of undergraduate core program in social or behavioral science or criminal justice or comparable field.
Major Worker Characteristics:
- Or completion of courses required for associate degree in social or behavioral science or criminal justice or comparable field.
- Or 2 yrs. exp. in social or behavioral science or criminal justice field which must include all of the following responsibilities: report writing, record keeping, interviewing, counseling & contact with social service agencies.
- Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
Knowledge of social or behavioral science or criminal justice or comparable field; community resources regarding employment, social services policy & program planning & analysis*; counseling/ interviewing techniques. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; handle emergencies & sensitive contacts with inmates or family members; prepare concise, meaningful & accurate reports.
