Under the limited direction of the Faculty Director, Undergraduate Research Program, the Associate Director manages the day-to-day activities of the Undergraduate Research Program (URP) for undergraduate students; promotes and facilitates the involvement of undergraduates in faculty research. The URP Associate Director develops innovative means for apprenticing undergraduates to faculty researchers in all academic disciplines, along with the development, implementation and the evaluation of new undergraduate research initiatives. This is accomplished in partnership with University academic departments, support units, and the administration.

Responsibilities

: Manages the activities of the Undergraduate Research Program; recruits and guides more than 20 faculty on the Board of Senior Thesis Readers in the design, development, teaching and evaluation of the senior thesis course, UNIV 401/402.

Oversees the senior thesis program throughout the academic year; coordinates and integrates summer undergraduate research programs. Provides direction and leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Undergraduate Research Program operations and procedures and makes recommendations for modifications and enhancements to existing programs and procedures.

Develops program funding opportunities and prepares extramural grant proposals; procures research support from participating academic units as well as from many individual faculty with externally funded research grants; designs summer research enrichment tutorials and guides peer facilitators; organizes student participation in annual Colonial Academic Alliance research symposium.

Qualifications

: Master's degree, and five years related experience in program administration and supervising undergraduate students. Requires program planning and implementation skills, knowledge of academic education curricula, and skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Knowledge of academic program administration in a university setting. Ability to develop and implement recruitment plans. Ability to design and implement curriculum planning and evaluation. Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments. Effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, the ability to present effectively to small and large groups; Ability to plan and evaluate programs; ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops. Knowledge of university budgeting and funding procedures, standards, and documentation requirements. Skill in grant writing, financial planning and fiscal management is desired. Ability to identify, evaluate, and accurately assess the viability of strategic opportunities.
