Income Tax Compliance – Review of trial balances and preparation of bridge files for uploading. Analysis of transactions and final results needed to calculate annual book/tax differences. Preparation of thorough and accurate work-papers to be included in the permanent tax return preparation files. Interview various accounting personnel to gain an understanding of transactional issues that may impact Staples’ corporate tax return. Initial preparation of apportionment and allocation work-papers to be input into the tax software. Extensive use of integrated tax software package. Processing of all required tax filings.
Financial Accounting for Income Taxes – Assist in the preparation of the accounting for income tax process. Participation in the calculation of federal/state/local current and deferred income tax expense, valuation allowances and balance sheet account balances in accordance with Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 109, Accounting for Income Taxes. Assist with the identification of the types and amounts of book income and expense that are currently taxable or deductible due to different income recognition and deduction methodologies for tax purposes.
Income Tax Audits and Tax Notices – Assist in gathering data and reports necessary to fulfill IRS document requests. Research and preparation of technical memoranda supporting tax technical positions taken on tax returns. Assist in the preparation of responses to tax notices received from various taxing jurisdictions.
Tax Research and Modeling – Perform technical tax research and writing related to tax planning and return filing positions. Assist the Directors and Managers in research and application of tax technical issues. Prepare tax-models quantifying the tax impact of various scenarios related to tax planning projects. Preparation of calculations and planning models that facilitate the review of alternative courses of action. Assist the team in implementation of tax planning initiatives.
Planning and Special Projects – Participate, as requested, in the ongoing development and implementation of tax planning strategies. Respond to requests from internal and external business partners and taxing authorities. Preparation of calculations and planning models that facilitate the review of alternative courses of action. Preparation of quarterly account analysis for various tax accounts.
