Cargill Canola Oils develops, produces and markets high-performance canola oils. Our business is backed by an intellectual property position in the genetic engineering of canola, and by a leading team of molecular biologists specializing in oil modification.
We develop proprietary planting seeds, contract with growers in Canada and crush and refine canola into premium oils sold to food processors and the food service industry, as well as to other organizations for inedible uses. Limited amounts of high oleic sunflower oil are also produced by our Specialty Canola Oils group.
A position is open for a talented individual with experience in molecular biology to isolate, create, and analyze genetic material for target traits in canola using molecular biology and genetics tools in Arabidopsis and Brassica napus. Target traits include manipulation of plant lipid metabolism, improvement in disease resistance, and other agronomic characters. This position independently designs and performs experiments aligned with new product development within the business strategy. Requires working knowledge of analysis of DNA, RNA, and Mendelian genetics to analyze contribution of genes/gene families to traits of interest. Works with supervisor to develop research plans, budgets and timelines, and works with direct reports and cross-functional teams to achieve objectives. 35% - Sequence target sequences to support genetic marker development; optimization and validation of high-throughput marker screening assays; expand marker offering to meet customer needs
35% - Manage incoming projects and provide throughput support; organize by priority and release data on or before deadline; manage LIMS data entry/export
15% - Supervise 2-3 direct reports including coaching, development, and performance management
10% - Record keeping and documentation; miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned; assist in the development of projects, budgets, timelines and milestones
5% - Adhere to existing SOPs and further QA/QC practices in support of transition to GLP environment

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related field plus 4+ years relevant experience in laboratory setting; OR Master's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related field plus 2+ years relevant experience in laboratory setting
Proficiency in application of molecular biology tools: isolation of DNA, PCR, plasmid construction, DNA sequence analysis
Documented ability to design, carry out, and report (independently and in collaboration with other members of project teams) experiments, results, and conclusions
Experience working in a team setting with internal and external collaborators; demonstrated commitment to safety
Demonstrated verbal and written communication, and effective interpersonal and team skills
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple individual priorities, with flexibility and organization
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related field plus 6+ years relevant experience in laboratory setting; OR Master's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related field plus 4+ years relevant experience in laboratory setting
Experience supervising individuals in technical setting as well as coaching and development
Experience scheduling multiple projects in a high throughput setting, ability to effectively utilize team members, and ability to leverage personal experience as well as that of team members to meet project deadlines
Experience with LIMS
Experience in evaluation of traits in Arabidopsis thaliana and familiarity with genetic tools available
Familiarity with plant breeding, genetics, and physiology of Brassica and Arabidopsis
Working knowledge of computers and sequence analysis software packages
Demonstrated ability to innovate and lead/participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team
Knowledge in plant lipid metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis
