We're now hiring full time Software Engineers at our office in software technologies team in Olathe, KS. Working in a casual and innovative environment, you will have an opportunity to work on the cutting edge technologies and apply the latest software development through tasks ranging from low level platform bring up on various operating systems to implementing high-level user interfaces. Opportunities exist for low-level developers, mid-level (protocol /algorithm) developers, and high-level (HMI / GUI) developers.

As a Software Engineer on the Software Technologies team, you’ll develop software for software applications including designing, implementing and testing software written in Java running on various platforms, performing software releases, quality assurance, and maintenance activities.

You may also perform as a technical leader or Lead Software Engineer, working collaboratively and professionally within cross functional teams, collaborate and add value through participation in peer code reviews, and serve as a mentor to less experienced software engineers.

Other responsibilities for this role include:
  • Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
  • Estimate level of effort, evaluate new options of similar technology, offer suggestions to improve processes, and provide comments on some electrical design aspects
  • Apply Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and enthusiastically exhibit a desire to see Garmin succeed
  • Apply a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
Software Engineers at Garmin may also review product and/or application information including manuals and brochures for technical accuracy and/or participate in product and/or application definition activities including feature analysis and system tradeoffs.

Qualifications

Candidates for this role should possess a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math or Physics or a technical field (such as CIS or IT) relevant to the essential functions of this job description from a four-year college or university with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA AND a minimum of 1 year experience performing a substantially similar role OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Proficient utilization of engineering tools plus knowledge and/or training programming in J2EE or J2ME necessary to develop moderately complex software is a must. Mastery of relevant software engineering tools (configuration management systems, build processes, debuggers, emulators, simulators and logic analyzers) and proficient ability to capture and document software requirements are additional requirements.

Candidates with experience handling complex protocols, developing Wi-Fi drives, and/or networking embedded systems are preferred. Previous experience working in a team environment and/or proven ability to research, document and present complex new topics is also a plus.
