The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE in Birmingham, Alabama is seeking to fill a postdoctoral opportunity in the HIV Laboratory of the Drug Discovery Division. Southern Research, a not-for-profit research organization with over 590 professional and support personnel, uses an interdisciplinary approach to translating basic research into FDA-approved drugs. The institute's scientists are credited with the discovery of seven currently used drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) including carmustine , lomustine , dacarbazine , fludarabine , amifostine , clofarabine and the latest pralatrexate (approved in 2009). Currently Southern Research is a designated comprehensive center of the National Cancer Institute’s Chemical Biology Consortium. Southern Research Institute is now expanding the Virology and Infectious Diseases Divisions. Postodctoral fellowships in the area of AIDS Research are available to work in a NIH-funded project related to the mechanism(s) of genetic resistance to HIV-1 infection. We are seeking applicants who are highly motivated, enthusiastic for basic and translational AIDS research and can work independently with projects funded by NIH. Objectives of the projects are to study mechanisms of resistance to HIV-1 and the host/viral factors involved.Candidates must have a PhD in molecular biology, virology, cell biology or relevant scientific discipline. PhD candidates obtaining their diploma by May 2013 will be considered (the PhD must be awarded before employment can commence). Strong molecular biology background and tissue culture skills are desired. Must demonstrate a keen interest in studying fundamental virology as well as antiviral drug discovery.
