Semi skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs. Responsible for installing, removing, replacing, relocating, and repairing all traffic control devices and barricades in accordance with the Uniform Traffic Control Devices Manual, departmental policies, and standards as provided by the Federal Highway Administration. Instructions are received verbally or in writing and work is performed independently under general supervision through on site field inspections and review of work orders.

Examples Of Essential Duties:

Travels to field locations and installs, repairs, or performs necessary preventative maintenance to traffic control signs to ensure compliance with prescribed federal standards including condition, placement, appropriateness, necessity, etc., and performs preventative maintenance tasks such as trimming trees and brush, cleaning of signs, and removing other obstructions which impair sign visibility affecting driver safety. Completes and submits electronic traffic signs work orders using the signs database system indicating sign location, sign type, work performed and reasons, vertical and horizontal measurements of signs, and time and date of repair. Restores damaged, vandalized, or weathered traffic control signs to insure compliance with federal standards. Places and/or installs various detour barricades and directional markers in accordance with detour site plans and federal standards. Washes, cleans, and provides routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Assists with the fabrication of traffic control signs when necessary.

Typical Qualifications:

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from High School and one year of experience in general maintenance and repairs to include the use of hand and power tools. Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required. Certifications in Traffic Safety in the Work Zone Area and International Municipal Signal Association Level I Signs and Markings are required within one year of employment. The ability to lift and carry traffic control signs weighing up to 75 pounds. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Supplemental Information:

Experience in traffic control sign installation and repair is preferred. Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and other regulations governing the use of traffic control devices. Ability to read, comprehend, and put into effect policies and procedures as stipulated by federal manuals and regulations concerning traffic control as well as engineering site plans and diagrams relating to traffic control. Ability to make independent decisions and to learn installation, assembly, and placement standards of traffic control signs and to learn the operation of and provide routine maintenance to assigned equipment. Ability to use all tools and equipment common to sign installation, fabrication, and maintenance; become familiar with occupational hazards and safety precautions; and understand and follow oral and written instructions, read road maps, read and write, and complete forms and records. Ability to understand and use Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Basic computer knowledge and data entry.

Work hours and days are Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
