3M Automotive Division is seeking a Product Development Engineer, located in Maplewood , MN for the development and characterization of polymer based composite materials and components for Automotive applications.

The position of Product Development Engineer located in Maplewood , MN will be responsible for but not limited to the following specific duties:

The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Development and characterization of polymer composite based components for Automotive applications.
Process development for producing polymer composite materials and components.
Work closely with Corporate Research Laboratories and Application Development Specialists to meet Automotive specifications.
Drive new product innovation, concepts and development in the area of polymer composite materials
Leverage and collaborate with Corporate Research labs and manufacturing to enable break-through solutions in materials and process development.
Work closely with global teams to enable concurrent product launches and align development activities with customer needs around the world.
Interact with customers to understand their needs and translate that into new product concepts.
Develop intellectual property to protect new findings.
Routinely review related art and literature.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications:
Possess or be in the last year of pursuing a PhD
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering preferred
Internship or Co-op involving polymer composite materials or characterization
Experience with an emphasis on development and characterization of polymer composite materials and components.
Experience with polymer processing
Experience in leading at least one major product commercialization effort from start to finish
Demonstrated ability to connect technologies and people from different locations and organizations to work in a cross-functional team
A passion for developing and commercializing new products
Familiarity with automotive industry or market
Familiarity automotive specifications and requirements
Ability to communicate and develop good working relationships across organizations
Proven ability to build and leverage a network of collaborators both internal and external to the organization
Previous experience working with cross functional project teams
Excellent written and oral communication skills with analytical problem solving ability
