The focus of the role is to provide informed EHS advice and direction to the site to ensure EHS programs are developed, implemented and effectively administered to the required standards in accordance Corporate policies and regulatory agency requirements.
Ensures a safe work environment by developing and maintaining the appropriate programs, policies, and procedures while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations. Works with our construction contractors to ensure their EHS programs are appropriate.
The EHS Director provides strong leadership in contracting, influencing and communicating EHS related programs and initiatives to both individuals, teams and site management, as well as towards external authorities.
Develops and applies new approaches to effective training and communication of safety, health and environmental topics to employees and managers.
Directs EHS compliance and management programs through a team of professional staff, ensuring compliance with all EHS laws and regulations and Genzyme standards. Manages employees either directly or indirectly who are engaged in EHS program design and administration. Provides directions, establishes objectives and drives execution.
Ensures that the EHS policies, procedures and programs for the site are developed and effectively implemented and maintained in a timely manner.
Ensures that the EHS policies, procedures and programs for the site are in compliance with all legal, regulatory, Genzyme and other requirements.
Ensures that the environmental impact of new processes and equipment is assessed and that where needed environmental objectives are formulated.
Informs the Allston Senior and Expanded management team leaders on the EHS performance in their department.
Keeps current on EHS regulations, accepted standards and reporting requirements, and evaluates their effect on operations.
Organizes periodic audits (internal and external) and inspections of facilities and operations to assure compliance with company policies and procedures and with legal and regulatory requirements.
Participates (as appropriate) with government agencies in the development of applicable EHS laws and regulations.
Prepares the EHS policy, objectives and targets of the site.
Prepares the EHS management review.
Exerts influence in the development of overall objectives and long-range goals of the organization. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would normally result in critical delays and modifications to projects or operations and cause substantial expenditure of additional time and resources. Provides guidance to subordinates based on organizational goals. Work is performed without appreciable direction.
Serves as organization spokesman on all EHS issues. Interfaces with management at all levels in order to understand and address any EHS issues. May be required to manage and negotiate with outside vendor's services. Ensures that the EHS programs of the contractors are appropriate.
Master Degree in Science or Engineering and 15 years experience in a EHS management function gained through positions with increased responsibilities within an international manufacturing environment, preferably within the (Bio)Pharmaceutical and/or Chemical Industry. Experience in management of site wide EHS program. Proven track record in Project Management. Detailed knowledge of EHS management systems. Full understanding of all EHS regulations/requirements for a manufacturing operation and for capital project installations. Able to manage projects to plan/budget.
Highly developed both interpersonal and communication skills at organizational, team and individual levels. Very good influencing and contracting skills. Effective facilitator
