Additional Salary Information: Salary for employees new to state government is $36,320. Salary is negotiable depending on qualifications and salary of existing Montana state employees.

In your cover letter, please describe in detail your work experience (including length of time) with governmental accounting, reconciliation and reporting of federal grants, developing budgets including multi-program budgets, forecasting, and preparing typical financial statements.

For this position, MHS offers yearly benefits, which include:

Duties:
This position performs professional level accounting and financial analysis for the Montana Historical Society. Responsibilities include 1) maintenance of the Society's financial systems, including the establishment of any necessary policies and procedures; 2) preparing, processing, and/or approving of all financial documents using generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP); 3) make decisions relative to financial activity in various funds; 4) Typical accounting functions that require SABHRS include payroll, revenue, accounts payable, grant management, and fixed asset management.

Competencies:This position requires:
Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), accounting theories, practices and methods of governmental accounting.

Ability to perform complex accounting transactions; ability to analyze and interpret financial and accounting records; ability to utilize a personal computer for analysis of financial data; ability to comprehend, interpret and apply a variety of laws and regulations in a consistent and appropriate manner; ability to take initiative and apply problem solving skills.

Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees in the Society, other state agencies and the public.

Thorough knowledge of MBARS

Education/Experience:
BA or Master's in Public Administration, Accounting, Economics or related field and a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in professional accounting.

Experience in governmental accounting is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
