Title: Scientist I/II
Location: MD, Gaithersburg – Corporate Headquarters
Major Duties and Responsibilities (including supervising others):
The position will be a part of a technology driven effort which will interface with multiple groups in Research and Development and will develop approaches to improve protein expression and quality in mammalian hosts. The position requires an individual with a well rounded background in cell and molecular biology, as evidenced in publications or achievements, with a focus on the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in mammalian cells. This knowledge will be applied to deriving a better understanding of the unfolded protein response ( UPR ) and its influence on the regulation of protein expression in CHO host cells. This is an opportunity to advance beyond current approaches in protein design, therapeutic protein production, and cell line engineering.
Special Skills/Abilities: This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual who wants to apply their experience and creativity to an area with high potential for improving the production of protein drug candidates. A background in modern molecular and cell biology techniques is required. Expertise in the quantitative analysis of gene expression, including QPCR or the analysis of microarray data and the use of bioinformatics tools, and experience in the modulation of pathways by overexpression of genes or their silencing will be essential. Experience with protein expression in CHO or other mammalian expression platforms in a biopharmaceutical setting would be helpful. Previous work on gene design and vector engineering would be beneficial. Innovative thinking, the ability to interface with scientists from multiple disciplines, and outcome focused work habits are keys for success. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the flexibility to work in a diverse, fast-paced environment are essential.
Job Complexity: High, both from a scientific standpoint, and from the requirement to be able to successfully interact with colleagues in Research and Development locally and across other sites. The ability to translate creative thoughts into tangible results which influence work processes and co-workers will be an indispensable quality for success in the position.
Supervision: High level of independence with an appropriate level of guidance.
Education: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Virology or a related scientific discipline.
Experience: 4+ years of specific research experience in molecular biology of the cell; direct experience with the stable expression of recombinant proteins in CHO cell lines would be advantageous
