JOB SUMMARY: This job is responsible for performing comprehensive medico-legal examinations and providing patient treatment/care for adolescent and adult victims of sexual assault in accordance with state and national medico-legal standards/protocols. Work also includes the timely and accurate collection of forensic evidence to be provided to law enforcement personnel for future judicial processes, and testifying in courtroom proceedings as an expert witness. An incumbent also acts as a patient/victim advocate in continuous contacts with physicians, patients, patient families/significant others, community agencies, FHS patient care staff and management. Work requires substantial specialized knowledge, judgment and skill based upon the principles of biological, physiological, behavioral and sociological sciences.

The application of critical thinking skills, including knowledge and integration of standards, resources and data, is applied in making decisions regarding patient care. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs medico-legal forensic assessment, screening and evaluation of patients for adolescent and adult victims of sexual assault in accordance with established guidelines/protocols: · Performs forensic examinations, to include: patient history, assault history, physical assessment (including visible injury and other remarkable findings), genital examination using forensic camera, and collection of laboratory and forensic evidence. · Collects/preserves physical evidence and maintains chain of custody for each sexual assault examination and strictly adheres to evidentiary protocols. · Maintains documentation/evidentiary logs and files pertinent to subsequent investigation of forensic cases.

Collaborates with multi-disciplinary team on treatment recommendations in accordance with established protocols and provides guidance with respect to SANE requirements, criteria and patient rights: · Prioritizes (by identifying potentially emergent issues)and performs direct patient care in within scope of licensure and prepares clinical documentation; consults with multi-disciplinary team of providers and staff as necessary to ensure patient’s receive the most appropriate and effective health care services. · Identifies and communicates clinical progress/status information to members of the care team as relates to the patient’s plan of care/discharge. · Serves as a victim advocate by providing emotional support and making recommendations/referrals for specialty care or other medical interventions as necessary. · Coordinates victim care and follow-up for medical, psycho-social and legal process with Sexual Assault Team (Sexual Assault Advocate and Law Enforcement representatives).

· Explains medico-legal concepts and considerations and ensures they are taken into consideration in the patient’s plan of care. Provides expert testimony in courtroom setting relative to medical/forensic examinations and evidence: · Collaborates with judicial system personnel regarding preparation for courtroom appearances, including review of forensic examination and content of expert testimony. · Testifies as to the conduct and results of the forensic examination and the patient’s plan of care; may provide testimony on related factors such patient’s history, medications, lab/diagnostic results, presenting behavior/level of cooperation and others of similar significance/relevance. Ensures compliance with state reporting requirements and appropriate documentation as identified by department policy and regulatory requirements/agencies.

· Provides consultation/training to staff and physicians regarding reporting requirements. · Maintains currency in medical/forensic evaluation of sexual assault victims. Participates in community education and prevention campaigns, and assists in community fund development efforts as required. Cultural Sensitivity and Competence: Demonstrates proper use of available communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services.

Patient Populations Served: Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department’s defined specific populations served. Performs related duties as required. QualificationsEducation/Work Experience Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and two years nursing work experience in a family, women’s health, maternal/child or emergency healthcare environment. Successful completion of SANE training and/or experience in crisis management and/or advanced psychosocial nursing is desirable.

Possession of a BSN degree is preferred. Job Knowledge/Abilities: Knowledge of rape trauma theory/approach and treatment methodologies, and of the age-related care needs for adolescent and adult sexual assault victims. Knowledge of the rules, regulations and professional standards applicable to the medico-legal forensic examination of adolescent and adult victims, including the Crime Victims Compensation Program, and collection of forensic evidence. Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques and tools of forensic assessment and victim care/follow-up for medical, psychosocial and legal process with a Sexual Assault Team.

Knowledge of medical and forensic terminology sufficient to prepare accurate documentation and communicate effectively with patients, families and other team members. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, FHS policies, standards, guidelines and triage/emergency procedures applicable to matters within designated scope of authority. Knowledge of the protocols and procedures applicable to testifying in court proceedings. Ability to apply standards, theories and effective techniques in analyzing, diagnosing and evaluating the treatment needs of adolescent and adult sexual assault victims.

Ability to use forensic equipment appropriately, including cameras and colposcope, in the documentation of injury and collection of evidence. Ability to identify, prioritize and verbalize issues that need resolution within the scope of the SANE practice. Ability to organize evaluation data for a forensic setting and to present testimony in court in a clear and articulate manner. Ability to complete and document clinical assessments in an efficient, accurate and timely manner.

Ability to demonstrate effectiveness in quickly establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and caregivers. Ability to express ideas and convey complex information in verbal and written communication. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the duties of the position, including physicians, victim advocates, local law enforcement agencies, city and county prosecutor’s staff. Licensure/Certification: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Washington State Board of Nursing.

Current Health Care Provider BLS Certification. Certification by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)is desirable. Current driver’s license valid in the state of Washington or other evidence of equivalent mobility.
